ok i know its a mk4 forum but i test drove one and,not impressed with the power it was pants, the drive is quite nice, and the hand brake why all the way over there, just ask the passenger to lift it for you,if no passanger you f****d.
-
there is a mk5 section just below this one mate
-
a lot of people have asked my opinion on the mk5 gti, my thoughts are much the same as yours. wouldnt mind having a blast in a modified one though to change my mind..

I think you are in the minority here with your views. Maybe if you described your test drive in better detail it would be easier to understand why you think along those lines as what you describe is hardly constructive. I am not trying to defend it just because I have one by the way, I am changing mine as I have not been 100% happy with it but not anything to do with the power. Also what car do you drive and what are you comparing it too?

You should be writing for Top Gear m8, what an excellent review!!
Need some exercise too if you found it difficult to lift the hand brake, thats one I havent heard before.
What do you drive yourself BTW?
-
are you sure it was GTI you drove mate, i owned a mk4 for 3 years and the mk 5 is beter in everyway
-
gtimk5, what are you changing too????????
-
I love the Mark 5 GTI and my only problem with them is the fact that i can't and prob wont ever be able to afford one!!
in my personal opinion in tornado red, 3 door and with the 18inch wheels it looks the business!!
-
im comparing the mk5 golf gti to the mk4 golf gttdi 130, i found that there is a lot more kick with mk4 gttdi and its only 130bhp.
the hand brake, well its more than less over by the passanger.
for the money i would like to feel the power not look for it.
im not going to say any more other wise i be hated by the mk5 golf owners,i dont wont that, may be the r32 will impress me.
-
never driven mk4, but did have a celica with 140bph and i tell you one thing the mk5 with 60 bhp is much faster with more power, so i don't understand why a 130bph car feels more powerful than a mk5.
how long did you test the mk5, did you put your foot to the floor??????
maybe i am bias, but i still have a big smile on my face everytime i take her out
-
its the torque.. not the power. the pd130 has a hell of kick low down but runs out of puff after 4k, the mk5 gti has a very smooth (too smooth ?) torque curve. without doubt the mk5 is the faster car.
i drove to my test drive in my 'tweaked' mk4 turbo, which puts down more torque and power than the mk5, probably explains why it felt a little flat no matter how hard i drove it, although it had plenty of grip and cornered well. but then i got home and went out for a blast in my rallye, probably similar power to the mk5 but out-handles it by far.
it just wasnt the car i was looking for, but as people keep saying.. lets see what the new R32 is like, im already on the waiting list for a test drive
-
i am not used to the power the mk5 has so maybe i not the best person to comment :embarassed:
but i too will try and test the r32 when it comes out!!!!
-
I am only 19 so i think most dealers will just laugh at me if i want a test drive in a Mk5 gti or an R32!! its not fair!
-
guys i have driven a new r32 and i think yuo will find it a bit of a let down, although its as quick it doesn't feel it, smooth power delivery! and although the back end looks the biz the inside feels cheaper than the GTI...
also only averages 20 to a gallon!!!! i get at least 28 out of my GTI!!!
-
i still want either of them!!
-
why did they copy the same desing as the renault on the exhaust side, not putting it down cause it does look tidy.
they should have put 2 4" style.
-
i am not a fan of the tail pipes, should be like the mark 4 r32 where they are furhter apart!
-
I have driven an old R32, was very impressed with the low down kick, also used to drive an 05 plate Civic Type R for my work car, i thought that car was too boyracer-ish but still liked the attention, then they gave me a 55 plate Golf GTI, ooooooh i was sooo excited, the first week was such fun, but then i got bored!
Want the Civic back!
Sorry guys, just my opinion! I reckon if i drove a modified one i would never get bored!!!

Hear what you're saying and sort of understand where you're coming from. However I would point out that everything in life is a compromise based upon a number of different things, what you can afford being just one of them. In m case my previous car was a 130 PD TDI Seat and whist it was very economical (50mpg o/a) and very easy to drive briskly (lots of oomph low down), it just seemed to get slower the harder you drove it because it was a diesel and they don't like being revved hard - having driven type R's the opposite is true of them I think.
So far I've loved driving my mk5 GTI because in my opinion it's a true multi purpose vehicle - quick, refined, practical, (reasonably) economical & lots of fun through the twisty bits - back to what Mk 1 & 2 Golf GTI's used to be about.
That said if I want to go really quick I just borrow my other half's heavily modded new age Scooby (when he's not looking of course) and give up on some of the economy & refinement for four wheel drive and an extra 100 bhp or so.................................
-
i think the overall package with the car out ways the fact you get used to the power of the car very quicky.
i have had my for over a month know and am still loving it, although i have to say the wife is driving it more than me(i've got the lupo :embarassed:), so it still feels fresh.
i feel no matter that car you have got(around the 200bhp mark) you as always going to want more power!!!!!
but as i said before the overall package with the golf out ways the need for another car at the moment!!!!

my mates dad was saying that years ago there was a billboard type advert with a golf gti against a astra gte at the lights (mark 2's both of them) and the guy in the glf was sat al relaxed whilst the astra guy was sat looking aggressive and wound up. I think the idea was that the golf may not be the fastest hatch back but is the best!

Ok as we had a 130 GT TDI and now own a 2005 SEAT leon TDI130se which imho is far more refined than the mk4 golf is but anyway off topic, i know this TDI engine well the kick is turbo lag it gets on my t1ts at roundabouts and junctions when you want a quick getaway go ok then sudeenly its away it feels fast due to the narrow power band and this lag.
Now as i drive both the leon tdi and the mk5 GTI daily i can compare and the GTI ingear pull is just as good as the TDI130 yes the GTi is at slight higher revs but gear for gear there a match and the GTI will rev higher in each gear too so not as many gear changed needed it has good low end pull. Its also very linier in power delivery and so does not get that woosh sudden pull old style turbo boost some would call it that the TDI has.
The mk5 GTI imo is also far quieter and more refined than both the TDI cars are/were. This of cause will make it feel slower too.
On the subject of the handbrake i sort of agree why they gave us the LHD side handbrake i don't know especially as the broucher shows the handbrake on the drivers side in every verion of the broucher i have seen for both versions of the centre concel. But all mk5s seem to have the LHD handbrake layout.

The golf was red and the astra white. I have multiple copy of it somewere it use to be in mags like autocar and whatcar in about 1990.

I couldn't agree more about the very short rev band in the PD TDi's and the switch like power delivery, it certainly gives the front wheels a hell of a hard time in slippery conditions when youÂ’re trying to make a quick getaway.:embarassed:
Similarly I agree with your comments about the broader linear power delivery of MkV GTi's. However in turn this brings up a couple of points for possible discussion;
1/ Does the MkV GTi engine really need a 6 speed gear box? As the power is so wide spread, wouldn't a 5 speed box make it even easier to drive in everyday situations?
2/ Alternatively to make it a sharper drivers car wouldn't it benefit from a slightly peakier power delivery?
LetÂ’s be honest, unless you have incredibly short arms the position of the hand brake 70mm off centre can hardly be a major ergonomic issue. And finally, I'm pretty sure that the shots in all VW sales literature are produced globally (i.e. left hand drive in all cases) and they just reverse the image and superimpose MPH for KPH for the UK market.
