just been to see a guy called greame of kintore's body shop near inverurie and intially he quoted 2k for a respray. so anyways he shows me some work hes done some thats waiting for collection for example an old triumph straight 6 looking mint as f*** and pictures of steam cars which hes totally restored for customers which have won first prizes in alfords classic car show so now im interested gets down to the nitty if i do all the work myself but let him do respray 2-2.5k fair enough for a full body respray. but then he offers to totally strip everything for me including trim/interior engine suspension brakes everything that can come of the car he will strip and rebuild obviously the engine recon will be done by me but was willing to get everything up and running for 4.5k now it might seem steep but think about labour costs sure i could do it myself but a very tight single garage would be a nightmare. all work doesnt include parts i rang up vw and got a quote on every panel door wing sill minus Big bumpers for 900 quid plus 550 head rebuild plus a grand allowance for a total engine conversion and bits
what do u guys think am i mad or stupid YOU DECIDE!!
-
It sounds a bit much but then you're talking about a lot of work  you could probably get it cheaper but would the do it to the same standard :undecided:
-
if you are gonna do it at least do it to a mk1

Does it really need a bare metal respray though?
-
well dont know when the cars in the bloke will see if it has been sprayed or is original if its original could save 1500 in labour costs and just do a respray
-
just get the mk2 tidied up and wait til youv got your mk1 before you go to all that trouble! If your plannin on doin both its a hell of a lot of money to spend!

A lot of money that you wont get back
-
didn't you just say you've got another kid on the way? if so i'd save your money!!
if i'm wrong and your not expecting then, if you can afford it go for it!
-
right the low down i have got the cash sorta baby is due he will be sorted i promised myself if i got another mk2 i would do it up as a treat for smashing the last 1 up as for i wont get my money back i dont expect to its the love of it isnt it and when i do the mk1 would be with a view to sell on and i know u can ask for top dollars for full restos not as keen on the mk1 i mean i love it dont get me wrong but the mk2 is something special and i walked out of a crash at 70 mph alive im not tempting fate.
let me ask all of you how much have u spent on ur mk2 the cost im quopted would be near enough everything done over the years how much has ur vw cost you??????????
im not being defensive i thought restoring cars regardless of cost was the love of it.
ive never came across any other car i would restore except an e type or maybe a moris minor (sad i know)

woah!!! punctuation please!!! i'm just starting to sort my paint work and i've managed to get some good deals, its looking at about a grand for everything i want done which is about 1.5k less than i was quoted. everything else i did myslef so saved a shed load of cash that way.
4.5k sounds good for a full resto though. i guess most people only upgrade/repair/replace as and when they have to.
-
sorry but i couldnt be arsed who needs grammar and punctuation anyway?!?!?!?!
-
My mate who on one the other forums was quoted 4k by premier for bare metal respray on his rallye. He took it to our b/shop at work told him bare metal ok for show cars, but if you take it down to bare metal you be loosing protection of the metal put on from factory. Got quoted 2k at our place, £800 on my car if i stripped it myself.
-
a lot of bodyshop's won't just do a respray and let someone else do the prep work as it's prep work that makes or breaks a perfect finish.
I think the bodyshop I use want between 2k and 3k to totally restore my car. I need to get my tailgate done soon so I'll ask again.
-
I just strip it take window out, bumpers, handles all that crap of, Lat them do the rest. Im BMW tech, body work i no nothing. Absolute mint spray come out of our body shop like. Cost £3 million pound body shop 4 spray booths, 1 aluminum booth, 6 or 8 jig bays, 16 prep bay. I work for biggest BMW dealer in europe.
-
ive decided to strip it myself so save £'s but might get them to do the tricky parts
-
yeh like Shaft said.^
strip it. I left my windows, lights and driver seat on. drove the car like that to the resprayer kinda like this..

Did it feel faster without all that weight?
I quite like the look too, any idea on legality?
-
Blue you tit. without the bumper on the front the whole front of the car isn't very strong! you could of bent it seriously driving it like that!
-
Blue you tit. driving with softline/TSW tealth alloys will seriously damage your reputation!!!
-
the bumper adds f**k all to the integrity of the shell, the crossmember on the front does that, a bit of plastic isn't going to stop chassis flex "if" something was to happen. It only bolts into a couple of chassis mounts. (the two big blocks you can see just below the headlights.)
-
don't the bumper bolts go through the cross member and chassis legs before bolting up to the bumper bracket, thereby adding 4 hefty bolts tying everything together? other wise the cross member is only held on by two pissy little bolts while supporting the engine? not saying it'd twist the chassis or anything but i wouldn't like to drive around with those two bots holding everything together.
-
My brothers mk2 didn't have a cross member  no idea why but it didn't fall apart
