Hi ppl i have a 88 mk2 gti 16v golf, and now and again the oil pressure buzzer will come on, the oil is fine and topped up,and its not the head gasket or anything like that,it seems to only happen after i drive it quite hard,it could just be a dodgy wire because when it comes on i just have to quickly turn sharpley and it will go off,but it only really comes on when i drive hard, any info would be great, cheers
-
it could well be the strainer on the uplift is blocked slightly i think its a common fault not just on gti's but on more standard vw as it did it to me on my old jetta.i have to say the top half of the engine seezed up and stripped the cam belt totaly fooking it.when i swaped the engine i noticed there were a build up on the strainer also present there were bits of plastic that had broken off the dip stick carrier.be care ful it might not be that simple as a dodgy wire it could lead to an expencive rebuild!!good luck! jamie

OK GREAT,LOL I WONT BE SLEEPING WELL TONIGHT LOL, SO HOW MUCH OF A JOB is it to clean the strainer then?is it quite straightfoward then?i spose i beter do it just for my piece of mind,i need a new sump gasket anyways, how long should it take?? would i need to put new oil in etc?? let me know, thanks
-
Disconnect the Buzzer?!!! If you cant hear it, it aint happening!!!
-
If you're putting a new sump gasket on then it should be an easy enough job..it's usually a film of oil covering the strainer stopping it from flowing properly...or it could just be a dodgy connection on the sensor :undecided:
better safe than sorry tho
-
thats a great idea???????not!!are you gonna pay for the rebuild if the strainer is blocked?dont listen to that dude it could turn out to be big trouble!besides that the when the buzzer comes on to tell you you are low on oil its too late the damage has already started which is why you should keep an eye on your levels all the time to insure the quality of your engine.even vw say that you shouldnt wait for the buzzer to tell you cos by that time your levels are way too low ,in the real world it should sound befor it actualy does.my advice is to put your blinkers on to all other advice that tells you to do sumik like dissconnect the buzzer!good luck, jamie

WOW! I was only joking!!! :nerd:
-
sorry dude maybe you should say ,some people would take what you said seriously and would have done what you said and in turn ended up with rebuilding ther engine.which is why people come on here for advice dude cos they dont know any better!as the old saying goes.....got all the gear but no idea!!! some peeps just dont have a clue!
-
K, i just thought the     might of given away that im joking?! Anyway....
-
arrrrr fook it it dont matter any how hes got the jist of it i reckon! soory dude i wasnt having ago at ya.you know what its like some people are that thick thyey just go and do sh!te without thinking about it.my mate once asked me how to top up his oil and where to fill it upto.i told him the mark on the dipstick.then his so called mate says dont worry il do it for ya........the end result was oil coming out the rocker cover cos he had filled it to the top,,,,of the engine and then wanderd why it had shot all the seals and blew it all over the place!!!!!

I agree with all your advice. Just wanted to add that it may not be that complex though. The wire going to the sensor is often badly corroded and intermittent with its signal, plus ive recently had an intermittent sensor too. Replaced/renewed both and all is good again. But yes if your already doing the sump gasket then deffor clean the strainer too.
-
cheerz ppl, most amused reading your posts lol!!! will check the strainer soon, booted it to work this morn and no buzz, so should be ok, better safe than sorry though! it is a lil tappety tho, is this normal for a 115k car?? id imagine so coz my old escort had done 70k and was twice as loud lol!! good old CVH lump lol!!
-
Mines done 180k and the tappets are getting pretty noisy. Goes off once the engine is warm though.
-
the tappets should be a bit quieter when u change the oil...i know mine were
-
a good service will always make a difference!i wouldnt have thought that at 115k it should be tappy unless its been hammerd all its life?it barelt run in!
-
LOL,IM A PERFECTIONIST, U CANT HEAR IT OUTSIDE THE CAR OR WHEN YOUR DRIVING,BUT WHEN ITS QUIET AND I SIT in it, and hold it at about 2000rph i can here one chater now and again lol, also if i have an exhaust blow near the front box and centre box would i lose power or torque, ??
-
the oil buzzer will sound when your driving hard if your oil level is a bit low too. this is because the oil gets flung up the side as you fly round corners which makes it think there is no oil in there. this is why people use windage trays and baffled sumps, to stop the oil going too far.
an oil change using vw synta oil and a genuine vw filter for around £16 from german and swedish will sort you out.
-
if it only comes on when your driving hard then the pump is probably knackered.
if your changing the sump gasket, and the strainer looks to be clean then buy a new oil pump and change it aswell. its only two bolts holding it in!
i doubt it would be a dodgy sensor. as its only coming on when driving hard, signifies that the sensor is doing its job!
-
ok then, will do, better safe that sorry,il try n get it done b4 silverstone!! thanks for all your help ppl, very much appreciated, Tom

had the same problem once on my valve, cleaned oil strainer, in the end oil filter housing had some sort of problem!
-
My 91 has done 210k miles. The tappets are only just starting to tap if i cane it too hard. The valve stem seals are worn aswell cause it smokes a tad when i pull away or going down hill, simple job tho, just cant be arsed to get up and do it, i use the cheapest and thickest oil i can find at the moment, no point in putting good stuff in as its only the person behind me at the lights that gets it in the face!!

I have had the same problem for about 4 months. Have done all the changes (gaskets, sensor, oil pump, lubes etc) but still get the occasional buzz. Have a feeling it may be the filter housing- is this an easy swap?
