Title: MK1 golf identification and other bits **Pics are up**
Post by: Deefadog on 10 November 2005, 10:50: OK, now i have finally got my MK1 home safe and sound I need to find out what spec i can call it, as it's a 1.3L 1996 South African import.

Firstly do VW and gsf stock parts for the MK1 anymore? and if so they are going to ask me what year and if i say 1996 it's going to confuse them, so which year should i say from the original UK batch?

I still get stuff for my cabby from VAG, but it's a 91, not sure how the tintop girls and boys get on. :undecided:

I need to get mph clocks, there a few on ebay and at the scrappies, will a gti fit with the mfa and will the mfa work or will i have to add extra parts to get them working as it's 1.3 carb and i don't think there will be a vacume for the mpg?

got the central locking kit going in soon, should make things alot easier :)

Post by: alpesh on 17 November 2005, 14:17: I have got a MK1 Cabrio, 83, GTi. To be honest, the engine layout, clutch cable routing, etc looks similar to my engine bay. I recognise the MK3 water bottle. Looks like a cocktail of MK1, MK2 & MK3 bits (may be).

Anyway, GSF still stock MK1 bits.

Looks nice........

Post by: Deefadog on 17 November 2005, 15:05: Thanks mate, did you notice the big cable going from the screen wash pump? it goes through the bulk head all the way through the car and connects up below the drivers rear light cluster! and it's an old round heavy duty 13Amp cable, probablly off a lawn mower LoL

I have no idea why it is going all the way to the rear though! Like it's getting power from the lights?

Has anyone got any close up shot of a similar engine bay?

Any idea why the washer power is going to the rear cluster?

Are u sure its a Citi model - I thought they were fuel injected. The engine in the pic doesnt appear to be fuel injected.

Post by: Deefadog on 18 November 2005, 08:45: alpesh, it's citi golf (chico model), but it's a 1996 (n reg), before they did alot of updating on them, so i have the original mk1 dash etc, which is what i wanted :)

it's a 1.3L carb btw, but is very nippy! as it weighs about 4 stone :)

Sorry to post other forums on here, but the www.vwgolfmk1.org.uk is a great place for mk1 owners of all types, I know there is definatly a few citi owners aswell :smiley:

Post by: tomo320 on 11 December 2005, 17:28: its a mk2 engine mate (later hydraulic tappet) with a different cam cover and carb. its a 'big block layout' same as 1.6 and 1.8 carb engines. if u go gsf u just ask for mk2 engine parts/clutch etc and mk1 gti exhaust and mk1 suspension, if u get stuck giz a shout. try and get yourself a haynes from ebay, just for citi upto 97'. p.s that headgasket looks a bit suspect :undecided:

Yeah there is some oils around the head gasket, i have not had a proper look yet to see if it coming from there or somewhere else!
