I'm having quite a lot of trouble with my 8 valve at the moment, especially in the wet. At the beginning of the week when I started the car, my rev counter was giving me silly readings. It was basically idling just above 0 and I'd be cruising at the normal idle rpm! Very odd. Turning the engine off and back on again seemed to sort it.
Next, this morning it was coughing and misfiring when moving off in first. Oddly, it seemed to sort itself out as then engine temp increased, but its still feeling quite "flat".
Any ideas what this could be? I also have a tail/sidelight circuit that blows a fuse whenever I go through a puddle, but that's another story!

Now i am not 8 valve expert so bear with me, but my mate had a flat spot with his digifant, check the earth on the ecu, my mates had a bit of grime on his and was a bit coroded, get a wire brush to it, that seemed to sort his. Or if not might be a dodgy air flow meter, sometimes if it has been messed with, they never seem to work the same again!

I was wondering...are my erratic RPM readouts and the nasty flat-spots related. I'm told that the rev counter works on pulses from the ignition coil. What would the symptoms of a failing coil be???

on my valver i had a dicky distributer and used t endure flat spots, which would also result in the rev counter pissin' about giving mye random revs of up to 3.5krpm, when it was prob doing about 500 max!
