First I have been given a life line, I can keep my GTI
So my engine is getting rebuilt (uprated) going to 2.0 8v from dubsport who are 20mins from me.
Anyway back to my question.
I need to upgrade my brakes to 256mm or the G60 280mm
What do I need?
Is it Just the calipers disc's & carriers or is there more to add??
Photo's will be taken for all my upgrades to help anyone else wanting to change to
Jay

If you are going for the bigger discs and calipers I'm pretty sure you need to fit the larger diameter master cylinder aswell (22mm as opposed to 20mm I think).
If you wanted to go as far as the 280mm disc you would need to start checking whether you have clearance behind your wheels (some 15's will clear them but not all).
-
pretty sure the hubs will need changing to 16v one's aswell...I'd go for the 280mm convo if they'll fit under your wheels, 256mm ain't up to much
-
Thanx for the replys guys, just one question.... Why might the hubs need changing?? I thought I could just change the carriers to support the bigger brakes?
-
The hubs wont need changing i wouldnt of thought, if your fitting G60 280mm discs then it shouldnt matter cuz the G60 was an 8v anyway?!
I have seen a G60 brake conversion for sale and the kit consists of discs and calipers, doesnt say anything about uprating master cylinder but if it was me, i would feel safer enquiring about the cylinder first. You may get away with keeping standard one and using uprated brake fluid? :undecided:
-
yes you should upgrade the master cylinder unless you want the pedal on the floor to get the brakes to work!
you should only need the caliper carriers not the hubs.
-
saying the hubs need changing is complete rubbish. It's the calipers and carriers that cause the most trouble as they are different lengths and will not allow you to put the new size discs on if you do not change them.
All changing the hubs is going to do is give you exactly the same hub as you had before. Upgrade the master cylinder to a 22mm job, and then sort the calipers and carriers out.

Obviously your cars an mk2 8v with 239mm brakes you WILL need to change the hubs, As carriers on 8v are built onto the hubs unlike 16v and g60 where carrriers are removable. Done my 1990 8v and fitted corrado g60 front brakes, And master cyl with braided hoses. Very last mk2 8v had 256mm brakes
-
Few other things you should know, If your using BBS RA's you cannot use g60 callipers as they will touch inner wheel rim. Will have to use 16v callipers as i did on my old 16v. If you use 16v callipers g60 pads will not fit as g60 discs are 22mm thick as to 20mm on 16v calliper does open wide enough for pads. Two ways round it either, skim 2mm of the slides will have to get engineer to do that or take 2mm of each of the pads faces as i did. sounds dodgy i know but if you want to fit them.
-
Just got home, It's a tad dark out here but It looks like I can unbot my carriers :undecided:  are there any other hubs that can swap the carriers>>
-
Mr 84_mk2_golf come and see me only live by wavertree and i'll take a look. PM me mate. Unles they've been changed previous bigger brakes 256mm didnt come on to 16v till 89 (86-88 16v had 239mm) and 8v on run out models 1992.
