Title: Konis / Weitec's or ...... ?
Post by: 16valve on 02 November 2005, 18:41
I'm looking to spend roughly £400 on a lowered set up which has to be fairly forgiving as Brighton and Hove Council do not cater for lowered cars (i know this from my own experience and the g/f used to own a Mini Cooper), i've been looking at Konis £399 as i was told they give a reasonable ride plus there T/A  but have also been looking at Weitecs as they seem to be good quality ...

Its for a 16v with design 90's 6" all round and 195/40 tyres if that makes a difference dont want arch contact as dont want to modify archs or tyres  so looking at about -40mm

So please any ideas or recomends or better suggestions?

Thanks Dave

Cool so FK's are an option and not harsh?

Forgot to mention the offset - wheels 52, adaptors 25 so Et 27? Hope thats not going to cause me grief as i've got the smallest rim 6" and going with 40 profile tyres ...

If your going for FK's only go for the top of the range models as they are made mainly of the KONI parts but a bit cheaper. But if you want quality, you get what you pay for!

Thats true, with suspension you get what you pay for. i had Koni adjustables on my old Astra GTE and they were awesome! Set them to hard and it out handled most things. Horrible ride tho!
-40 should be safe, ive just lowered mine on -60 springs (although its now -85) with standard shocks, it handles OK but not brilliant. if you use standard shocks like me then they wont last that long

Agree with you there Si. I got KONI fully adjustable coil overs and they are very very good! Not back breaking and good adjustment in dampness. But they are probably the most expensive. Glad i got them with my 1st golf and didnt have to buy them myself.

for the money your looking to spend I'd get the koni adjustable damper set-up, put a kit on my old fiesta and it could run rings round most things on them!

just don't put them straight on the hardest setting, it'll shake your nuts off and doesn't offer any more in handling... about 3 quarters on the front and just a lil bit softer on the back...that way it'll follow the front nice and progressively..comfy too

Whats the optional comfort pack?

C&R do a comfort kit with mk3 top mounts and different bump stops .. so hopefully it wont be too bumpy otherwise little woman will have a go for ruining a perfectly good car

Will keep you informed and hopefully get some pics on my sig, lowered with different wheels, if i ever get the tyres £Â£Ã‚£'s

If i transfer my visa to a new card i'll get interest free credit, but then i'll have two cards to abuse!!! But new shiny stuff, Mmmmmm Shiny Golf stuff  (where's the dribbling smiley?)

am thinking about saving up for the same kit myself so be sure to let us know what they are like as dont want anything too harsh riding.

by the way how much extra were the comfort kit & the poly bushes ? are the konis top adjustable front & back, and what is it thats different about the bumpstop ?

Hopefully this set up will be really good, as everyone used to say Konis with Eibach springs were the one to choose..

I have read in the Golf mag in Q&A's a while ago that C&R had developed a comfort kit out of different vw parts (not sure from which model), so when I ordered they suggested it might be worth considering as I mentioned  I needed to retain some comfort which set me back £110.

The fronts are only top adjustable, but I think he said you can adjust the rears but not in the same way - so maybe off the car or wheels off? I would have paid more attention had I not been at work pretending to be busy with urgent work related matters hence the could you shut the office door and give me a minute routine

Aslo ordered wishbones and bushes and some other bits recomended to renew the steering of a 15year old 'Classic' car (thats what the g/f called it - which I quietly liked)

Ordered all of above on Thurs just before lunch and it arrived minus the Konis on Friday,so hopefully they will be here midweek and I can get fitting i'll be armed with the digi for some greasy fingered pictures

Have fitted the Konis and looks better already it wasnt as diificult as i imagained and i've been told it will settle down more when i start to use it, which will be next week as my company pick goes back

Have driven it round the car park at work (where it lives) and it feels so much nicer and it didn't seem bumpy or harsh and the best thing - it sits level! Before surgery it seemed to point up in the air like it was trying to take off.... although it had an original rear shock and only half a bump stop, and only one front shock had been replaced so it was all over the place, so much for a car thats been serviced properly all its life!!!

Will post pictures up ASAP
