Title: 15 Alloys on Mk2 GTI
Post by: davidhawkins_78 on 30 October 2003, 14:28
hello peps,

Bit of a silly post really - oh well ...

I'm new to this VW scene and got a mint PB engined 8V GTI and the modding has begun !

I've just fitted SPAX adjustables lowering 40mm and on the look out for some wheels BUT on a budget as polished BBS will requie a visit to Turkey and losing a kidney !!.

Basically I've been offered a set of 15' Fox 3 (multispoke) alloys for ?150 (et35) with almost new tyres in excellent condition!!

For the money I'd say it's worth it but wondered if 15's are simply gonna look too small - ok I'm gonna keep the handling characteristics and acceleration etc but i'm wondering if I should hold off for bigger??

wheels all comes down to personal taste!, alot of people are doing the retro thing rather than bangin the biggest wheels they can find! my mk2 8vs got the original pirreli 'p' wheels and looks nice as its lowered, i had 15"bbs on another mk2 years ago and wouldnt say the handling differs that much when changing wheels!, oh yeah if you aint got PAS your arms will notice the difference when it comes to parking!

I've just bought some 14" Steffans for my cab, so these wheels are going up for grabs soon. They do need quite a lot of work done to them as they are badly kerbed- but the tyres are all fine. they are 17" with 205/40/17 tyres.
Let me know if you are interested as I was only going to stick 'em in the shed with all the others!!

David, like kniterider said it's all down to personal taste. My best advice is to get them on the car and have a look before you buy, if you like 'em-buy 'em. If you don't like them give them back, you've lost nothing. Happy shopping.

I agree with Gambit that anything bigger than 15's don't look right, but as other have said it's all down to personal taste.

Yeah BBS RA's look the business, but they are a pain in the backside to keep clean!

If it's handling you're after, just look at almost any MKII that races.

15's all the way, better choice of sticky rubber (ooerr missus) 'an all.

Cheers for the advice guys - over the weekend fitted some angel eyes, 16 valve rear clusters and did buy the 15's ...

I'll post some pics up - looks rather smart I must say, the SPAX have lowered just enough for the wheels to nicely fill the arches.

Good job I got them too the inner track on the old wheels were as legal 12 year old prostitute in stringfellows !! :S I'm gonna have the chassis laser aligned to make sure but sometimes this can't be helped even when set up properly !

My previous car was practically a race spec XR2 and with the camber on the front wheels the tyres would just vanish in weeks! Do Golf's have a tendancy for this too (it's a Mk2 GTI) or am I gonna find the tracking is madly out as it's doesn't feel like it ?!?!?!

How easy where the angel eyes to fit, what did you have to do? I've heard about baking them!! I thought it would just be a case of cutting through silicone sealant between the glass and back housing.

I was a jammy bugger and got the misses to get them as a birthday pressie - found a complete headlight set on eBay so just a case of fitting two new headlights !

Just need some Ice blue headlamps now :S

Ive got some of the 15'' winter steels on mine, and  a scorpion exhaust. But im going back to some 14'' bbs alloys and a standard 16valve chromed tail pipe exhaust-as its been said, its down to taste-big wheels dont mean a thing.
Get it lowered though because a mk2  does feel like a boat when you get back into a standard one after driving a 40mm lowered jobby.
