Title: uprated top mounts, what to go for?
Post by: russ_turner on 30 October 2005, 11:01
i recently fitted spax coilovers to my mk2 16v, they are running a moderate height and on the softest damping setting. trouble is my top mounts don't seem to agree with them. after the second day of having them on the car i noticed one of the mounts was being pushed through the suspension turret (obviously split and a little worse for wear). i have since changed both mounts for new items but im worried about how long they will last.

has anyone fitted concentric or eccentric top mounts to their car? if so what are the benefits and where should i go to get the best deal?

thanks for looking, russ

The ride comfort on my golf isn't elise style, but it's far from Audi A8 quality. I haven't had any trouble with my top mounts ever coming through the turrets though and I do throw it about a lot. I think there are some uprated mounts out there made by the same people that do all the other poly mounts.

The previous owner of my car fitted G60 top mounts along with a lot of other suspension mods. Not sure what the difference is with the mounts...

I have heard people using G60 and Passat Top mounts, which I guess would be updrated over a std Mk2 one.

g60 mounts are stronger but i've also heard you can use mk4 ones which are strng and comfy!

thanks for the replies chaps, but im more interested in something like this -

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/VOLKSWAGON-GOLF-MK1-MK2-ADJUSTABLE-TOP-MOUNTS_W0QQitemZ4585917004QQcategoryZ9889QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem

see with this type of mount you can dial in camber and caster angles - all useful stuff to have when those v6s and mi16s are hunting you down!

im running whatever camber i can by tipping the hub carriers in at the top (careful adjustment with trolley jack - essential!) it seems to have made a nice difference. where as before the tyres used to scrub and scrabble for grip, now they just sit up and ask for more!

i've just ordered a pair of these mounts so we'l see what happens!!

thanks again for the posts

Camber adjustable top mounts very usefull for track work. increasing camber angle can give you more front end grip, less understeer. Running too much camber is going to dramaticaly increase your tire wear on daily use though.
It can be very helpfull on a car with a heavier engine conversion (vr6) to prevent the fron running wide due to the extra weight.
