Title: mark 1 gear prob ?

hi, i am now the proud owner of my sisters old 1.6 1983 golf. the problem is that it is really hard to get first gear. I have taken it to a couple of ropey garages who without examinimg it mumble about new gearbox...uneconomical etc and generally look less than keen to fleece me. It drives like a dream otherwise and so I wondered if anyone had any ideas about what the problem could be or could recommend a sympathetic garage in South or East London.

Its not out of adjustment is it? Once in gear is it OK? If so, I would suggest 2 things, first of all check your adjustment, I'll dig out the site again for you.
If its all within tollerance then change the oil for fully synthetic. That should do it.
