I'm after a mk3 gti. I've seen figures of 10.1 and 8.5 for 0-60 times for the 8v and 16v respectively. I've also heard that the 8v does it about half a second slower than a 16v. Which is true? Any help, greatly appreciated.

both are sh!t get a mk2 16valve, faster, better handling and you won't lose money if you pick the right one,
If you are determined to get a mk3 at least get the Vr6
-
8 valve is sub 10 secs 0-60 but not lightening quick. Cheaper to run, fuel and insurance wise. 16 valve is quicker (obviously) bit more pricey to own. VR6 is the bollox fast as f*ck, but thirsty, expensive to insure, bit dearer on the servicing costs too. Depends how deep your pockets are mate. Still very reliable the MK3
Mk2's are probably the best GTI but getting on a bit so if you go for one expect a bit more maintenance expense.
Happy hunting!

For what you would pay for a mk3, you could get an absolute minter of a mk2. Its gotta be the mint mk2 every time. :)

amen -
Why would you want a boat?
-
Thats that settled then 8)
-
Yeh they handle better but the dash & interior looks a bit naff and dated now, and thats what you gotta look at for thousands of miles. Mk3 interior and dash is much better.
-
it all depends on budget... ;)
-
I love both mk2's and mk3's. I did have a mk2 but I have now upgraded to a mk3. It is a bit slower ( depends on the driver) but is an over all better built car and they are not quite a common as a mk2 but still a VW is a VW you can't go wrong.
-
Is that an 8v or a 16v? Is there much difference between the two? I'm looking at an 8v 97 P reg and a 16v 94 M reg. Both have done similar mileage, are in good nick, FVWSH and are up at about ?2700. Which would be the best?
-
What do ya wanna do? Go faster or save running costs and have a newer car. I know if i was looking for a MK3 again I would have waited for a 16 valver with air con, instead of the 8 valve with air con and paid a bit more for a newer car, how old are you? whats the insurance gonna cost?
-
Go for the 16v ;D The mk3 is not a boat if you change the suspension! 8)
-
I'm 28 and the insurance is gonna be about ?420 with Tesco. I can't find anyone else who comes even close to that figure.
-
I used to have an Impreza turbo, UK car 97 P reg. I paid ?1200 to a main dealer just for a clutch!! :o I want a car that's more reliable and cheaper to run. I've driven a couple of 8v's and they aren't that dissappointing to drive, so I may well go with the younger car.

What is everyone on about....
mk2 16v vs mk3 16v
ok... I had a mate who had a Golf mk2 16v and my brother had a Rover 420 GSI saloon.
the mk2 16v= 140bhp
420GSI (de-cat) = 150bhp ish (same as golf mk3 16v)
the Rover p!ssed all over the Golf mk2 16v.
id say the mk3 16v is quicker... 150k difference in weight i think... thats not much really... the mk3 has more bhp, more torque, better fuel management etc etc.
-
The mk3 16v is definately better if you chip it :D
-
I got the mk3 16v today!! Filled it up with Optimax and off I went. Keep you informed of the progress.

Yup I think so, all standard but for the K&N, was gonna mod it more but as you know VR6 I gotta sell it and get a family wagon in a few months so not worth shelling out for now, bit gutted its gotta go cause its a lovely car but you cant get a 6 year old and twins and all the gumph that goes with em in a golf.
