Title: 3 Prong plugs
Post by: kr1s77 on 25 October 2005, 22:49
Am i right in thinking that my 97 mk3 golf 2.0 gti 8v is supposed to be fitted with 3 prong spark plugs?

Well anyway, i fitted some about 9 months ago. 3 months ago i sent it in to a Volkswagen specialist (well supposed to be) to service. lately I've noticed it was running a bit rough & hard to start. So today i purchased some 3 prong plugs to fit, even the guy who served me was saying that people don't realise that golfs use 3 prong plugs. So when i took out the first plug i was surprised  to see a single pronged plug, so were the others!

Never even seen 3 pronged plugs!

Use Splitfire which are 2 prong.

My 16v runs fine with single prong.

most VAG engines use 3 prong plugs, developed by them and bosch. There are also 4 prong ones you can replace most single prong plugs with. The idea is the spark operates over a bigger surface area, and therefore the spark itself will not corrode the electrodes very quickly.... Like... 3 prongs will wear out in the same time 3 single prong plugs will wear out. See??
