Title: Crank rear main seal replacement- special tool required?

I'm mid-way through a clutch replacement and was planning on replacing the crank seal.at the same time. Mine isn't leaking, but all advice seems to to change while I'm in there. Ive got AKS billet one to go in.

However, ive come to do and the Haynes says the install is essential, which I didn't realise. The tool seems to cost £70+!

Can the new seal be fitted effectively without the tool or is just gling to start leaking? Im tempted to just leave my old one in as it isn't leaking.

Changed the clutch and dmf on my mk6 at about 90k  miles but left the main seal. Done 15k since with no problems. Definitely need the tool if replacing.

Problem probably solved. Elring (the seal manufacturer) have a video showing how to use 1.25l Coke bottle at a make-shift seal installation tool. Shall give that a go tomorrow.

The drink bottle based hone-made tool worked perfectly!
