Title: GTI | 50 INFO
Post by: MrEdition50 on 23 April 2026, 09:50
Hi guys, right after some investigation, ive managed to find out some stuff regarding the ed50 so, first of all there is and its now confirmed 1,500 units coming to the uk and they will be numbered and receive a plaque!  secondly, the problem and reason why alot of peoples build dates are slipping back is due to the performance pack and the titanium exhaust, so cars without PP will be built from now and be here for the start of summer (or earlier) with the exceptionally lucky ones getting theirs with the pp but it will be more non PP cars than PP cars, these are expexted late summer. i myself was told september for mine so not expecting a confirmed build date or anything until alot later in the year now, hope this helps and if anyone has anything more please update this post with anything ED50

Thanks for the information, much appreciated. Were any other component shortages mentioned, I heard there was a problem with the supply of Warmenau wheels?

I think selling 1500 units is very optimistic with the current price point.

Yes, as I said in the main Edition 50 thread, my inter columbo found this 1500 out via auto trader Murray Newton Abbot ad. How did you find this info?

The plaques are defo not happening, you can see posters here with RHD UK cars delivered without a plaque. That's a shame!

Unless they start doing mega lease deals like in the EU when they launched in the EU at 399 PCM, no chance 1500 pieces will be sold. Sub 1000.

VW seems have have forgot the concept of trades off. It should have been either very exclusive and limited production worldwide and customers pay full RRP or its a serial production car thus often reasonable offers to entice new customers to off-set the RRP of the car. Then they would easily shift 1500 cars. You can't be sitting in both fences.

1500 was just a production planning number. The most the factory might make... Rather than being a concept of deliberate rarity, it was a reflection of limited customer base.

Speaking as someone who works in manufacturing...

So If I read this right, and I did read it several times to understand, if 1500 was the VW UK's max, then they anticipated they will sell not that many? Why would they have initially gone with 1000 and then later changed to 1500? I would have assumed it was because many order were coming in, so they have to rightly capitalise on it, else their leaving chips on the table. Gotta make up that 5/6 billion EV R&D write off somehow. I'm doing my bit

They don't make 1500 though and the contract with the parts suppliers (vw are basically assemblers of parts) is agreed at a maximum volume that they may or may not reach. There is no extending.

It's fairly normal tbh in JIT manufacturing of small runs of complex stuff.

The balance either gets cancelled or continues into the spare parts inventory over several years.

Found out from the same dealership they had it confirmed from VW just 2 weeks ago, and as for the plaque it is happening but will be at a later date but all uk cars will get one,

Do you work for VW in manufacturing?

No plate supplied and was told still going to be a 1000  hopefully they only sell 500 or less lol  if orders are already running late they will have to stop taking orders in August as to give them time to arive by December as January they won’t be a 2026 anniversary they will be 2027

Someone at VW will have to make a decision on numbers sooner or later. Probably sooner.
Speaking to a dealer in April 2025 immediately after the sales manager had returned from Wolfsburg to get a preview of the Ed50 amongst other things at HQ they’d been told there would be unlimited numbers and the order book would be open from the very start of 2026 until the very end. No doubt VW UK (as opposed to VW HQ) will have their own ideas and possibly things have changed at the factory since then, I’d have imagined that components would have to be ordered in quite well in advance of production slots.

Going back to the Ed40, they sold in small numbers owing to price and lack of incentives (sound familiar?) and quite a few were scattered around in various specs to dealers in the UK in early 2017 who were then told to pre-register any remaining ones in March 2017 (and I bought one of those in early May 2017 with a sizeable saving).

Moral of the story, don’t take as gospel what you hear from UK VW dealers! Things seem to change from VW UK from time to time.

Garwen, love the car, that’ll be the sought after spec in years to come I’d imagine. The bottle of Moët was a nice touch. I did see some photos Sinclair put up (who I don’t follow but my VW related algorithms must’ve picked up) on social whatnots.
