Title: Standard OEM Battery Type - AGM or EFB?
Post by: Bluest on 16 April 2026, 17:17
Is the standard factory fitted battery on a 2015 car an AGM or an EFB? The look-ups on sellers' websites seem to be happy to list both types as suitable, but whilst they might work, fitting the wrong type will shorten it's life.

I still have the original EFB battery made by MOLL in my 2019 car.

EFB in mine from new. But you can fit what you want, but do code it for the BEM.

Cool so you can tell the car what type of battery it is via the coding?

EFB is the standard, I upgraded to AGM and so far it has lasted 2 years longer than the OEM one.

Now we also have AFD batteries that seem to either (depending on what you read) sit between the two or are better than AGM.

Hard to find at the moment but might be my choice when my original goes.

My car is 8 1/2 years old and still on the original Banner EFB battery. When it goes I'll probably replace it with another, I'm not sure there's any benefit of going AGM, at least for me.

Would the OE battery be a Banner? They're a bit of a budget brand aren't they? I'd expect Varta of something.

Personally, I'dstick with EFB, more robust in a hot engine bay than AGM.

As I said my original one is a Moll, I had a Banner battery as OE on my previous MK5 TDI which I had from brand new - replaced it with another Banner (they are Austrian I think) when the time came.

I got rid of my Banner EFB and put in a Bosch AGM a year or two ago, just code it with OBD11 or VCDS.

Bosch have an excellent brand, and 'share' production with other battery companies including Varta and Exide.

They do make good wiper blades though
