Title: How to clean the tiny window
Post by: Tarmac_Terrorist on 03 November 2025, 22:18
I’m looking for ideas as to how to effectively clean the inside of the front quarterlight window glass. Kind of need a very small triangular microfibre cloth on a small stick.

Or a child with a small hand and a microfibre cloth

Being as the mk8 is just an uglified sorry heavily updated mk7(.5) I did a quick search as I can remember, in the dim and distant past, this very issue arising previously.

Here’s one I found:

There are bound to be other posts if you’re patient using the search and key words.
It’s quite nostalgic doing deep searches seeing how many people who were regular forum posters that are now long gone from these boards.

I bought a handy little tool years ago, probably in the "middle aisle" in LIDL that would do the trick here. It was specifically for cleaning windscreens or any awkwardly angled glass. It was basically a short telescopic pole with a triangular pad on the end of it with a removable/changeable microfibre cloth/pad on it. I haven't seen it in ages, but it must be still out in the shed. I must see if I can find it!

Alternatively, I think you could easily do the same thing by squeezing a lightly damp microfibre cloth (spray some window cleaner on it) into that triangular "gap" in the dash and then use a stick/screwdriver to push it around, wipe it around.

That said, in all my years owning MK7 and MK8 Golfs, I don't think I've ever felt it necessary to clean the inside of that little window!

That said, in all my years owning MK7 and MK8 Golfs, I don't think I've ever felt it necessary to clean the inside of that little window!

Likewise, 12 years of mk7 & mk8 and never cleaned the triangles as they didn’t seem to need it, and I am a fusspot who likes to clean my car as often as I can (within reason), that’s why I had to search for the cleaning tips on here. That said I’m sure a google search of wider forums will throw up more tips similar to those you suggest Joe.

A point of note, maybe it’s down to dealer prep but despite picking it up during the warmest, driest summer in years locally, my 8.5 seems to have the most repeatedly smeary inside windows on any car I’ve owned in over a decade. I’ve cleaned them with a variety of automotive and household glass cleaners and the smears return quickly, even using brand new glass cloths. I’m wondering if the new dashboard gives off lots of fumes.

I find the same! The inside of the windscreen does seem to get grubby and smeared/streaky looking. And it’s an absolute pain to clean it. You think you have it done right and then you drive headlong into direct sunlight and it’s smear city! With the larger phablet screen atop the dash of the 8.5, it’s an even bigger palaver to clean the windscreen.

I had same problem with my windows until I used Bilt Hamber traceless glass cleaner. I had to clean the windows twice but they're clear now. Anything else I used just moved the grease about. Maybe there's a greasy coating left on them from manufacture. I bought a bathroom mirror a couple of years ago and it was greasy and had a hard job cleaning it to start with.

Thanks for the suggestions. It’s not that it looks especially dirty but I feel I should clean it monthly along with the other interior windows. New cars seem to get a bloom on the screens due to the new plastics I’m told. I’ll keep on the look out for a fluffy triangular muff on a stick then! 😁

I recommend using a chimney brush to shove a small child into the space. It's a bit old fashioned but effective.
