Title: ID Polo GTI
Post by: Rudedog on 03 September 2025, 20:59
Sorry I know this isn't a Golf but maybe a look at what might be on the cards (the GTI is in the second half of the video).

The concept was previously called the ID. 2all and pictures of the GTI version were doing the rounds a couple of years ago.

Yes I remember but it's nice that they've kept a familiar name - I guess there's hope that the Golf name may stay on.

So great they kept the iconic name. Because wtf is ID.2, omg.

This was confirmed a good while ago. Volkswagen will keep the Golf name for future electric vehicles, as confirmed by Volkswagen and Thomas Schäfer, who stated that "iconic names like Golf, Tiguan and GTI" will be transferred to future electric vehicles”.

So great they kept the iconic name.

My cynical heads says keeping the iconic names allows them to sell some the Editions every 5/10 years.

For the love of god I hope the badges front and rear aren't lit up. My guess is GTi badges in a couple of editions time with have the side GTI badges lit up too, to spice up the range from older models as they run out of ideas.

The rest is ok in a VW 'ok' kind of way...

Of course you have to keep the iconic name, like in this case where this car actually looks like futuristic Polo (also same size), but not when you're doing some electric SUV (?) bullsh!t and call it "Mustang".

What does the ‘I’ in GTI stand for in an electric car?

What does the ‘I’ in GTI stand for in an electric car?

Good point - something I’ve pondered and questioned on other forums before……….

😂 Very true, I’m old enough to remember when a car with an ‘I’ in the badge was looked upon with envious eyes.

You could also ask about Porsche's use of 'turbo' on their electric cars.

Mini has two ‘I’ s in its badge .

I’ll get my coat and leave quietly…………….

Very telling that in the face of an onslaught of Chinese vehicles from unknown brands, that the best form of defence a legacy brand has is to keep a familiar and almost reassuring name.
VW have gone the safe route and kept “Polo” but Cupra have been more daring and gone for Raval instead of potentially using the more familiar Ibiza name. Unless SEAT get the nod to make their own version of electric Ibiza further down the line.

Anyhow, so long as it stays FWD I can’t see any issue in using the GTI ‘brand’ as an EV.

This is good news for VW I think, they seem to have been left behind in the EV market. The Chinese brands are very impressive, better spec'd and cheaper to buy. Renault have pulled a blinder with the 5 EV and the Alpine A290, bringing back the retro nostalgia, along with being very competitively priced. VW / Cupra need to match what Renault have done, they will do well if they pull it off. (The new Renault 5 is the first EV that made me think about changing the Golf GTi and going electric!).

Renault 5 Turbo 3E, starting at £140,000 on the road, great looks but nope!

It’s likely to be a Renault 5 EV for me next time; top spec Iconic trim and the 52kWh battery option in Arctic White with black roof .

Renault seem to be on a roll just now. The retro styled R4 seems to have been equally well received by the motoring press as the R5. I really like the styling of the Megane EV too; I wouldn’t buy a Megane though as I don’t need a car that large.

Don’t come crying to us SRGTD after 6 months of Renault ownership and your flat tyre warning and interior lights come on instead of the brake lights when you hit the brake pedal! 😁

Just kidding, the R5 looks to be the best small EV right now by quite a margin. Whether an A290 would be a better bet for daily driving after a GTI owing to sluggish acceleration at motorway speeds from the standard R5? (Plus it looks cooler)

Ha ha! I’ve read very little - if anything - about electrical gremlins affecting the current generation of Renaults.

I may be wrong but seem to remember reading that much of Renault’s past electrical woes were down to the company being 100% state owned until the mid 1990’s and the French government could ‘influence’ (dictate?) who Renault’s component suppliers were, which resulted in poor quality components being used and subsequent build quality and reliability issues. That government financial stake is now around 15%, so although still a significant stake, they no longer have absolute control.

I do like the way the A290 looks, but then I also like the way the standard R5 looks. With the highly congested single carriageway roads in my neck of the woods which is where I do most of my driving, I think the opportunities to enjoy an A290’s superior (to the R5’s) performance would be somewhat limited, as they are with a GTI too.

VAG missed the mark with their first electric things big time. Just too little for too much money.

It was always going to be like that, their dependency on western Europe for design and build meant their costs were too high for something which should always have been cheaper than ice.

First the Chinese ate their lunch and now it's others.

Still not convinced their next attempt will end any better.
