Title: Which engines can be converted (upgraded) to GTI equivalence?

Can a base model mk2 engine be converted? or an automatic engine? can a 1.6 be uprated? I swear I've tried to find what I'd like.

Anything is possible but you would usually look to swap out the complete engine of a base model for something else, be that GTI, VR6, 20vT etc. You are going to spend a lot of time/money/effort 'uprating' an old 1.6, when better options are available.
