Title: Car detailing advice/experiences please
Post by: MarkHowells on 29 May 2025, 20:26
Although my GTi is only 8 months old, I am thinking of having some detailing done to show off the oyster silver metallic black colour.

I have had some priced options but not sure what I really need. I have decided to go for a ceramic coating but wondered which one of these options to go for or if anyone else has had their car done.

Bronze Ceramic package: £150 (option to upgrade to a 2 year coating for £75 extra):-
Full Exterior Safe wash
Full Decontamination (iron fallout)
Clay Bar to Bodywork
Plush towel dried
All bodywork wiped and prepped for coating
1 year protection Ceramic coating applied

Bronze Plus: Ceramic package: £250 (option to upgrade to a 2 year coating for £75 extra):-
Full Exterior Safe wash
Full Decontamination (iron fallout)
Clay Bar to Bodywork
Plush towel dried
Single stage machine gloss enhancement
All bodywork wiped and prepped for coating
1 year protection Ceramic coating applied

Hi,

Personally I would go for the bronze plus as your car even being 8 months old will have marring on and claying a car can also induce marring so at least a single stage will take most of it all out.

To make the car show off the paint a polish is always worth it.

Would be more interested in who the detailer is and his work than the cost plenty of so-called retailers around that are very poor at what they do!

Agree. Also whether they’re a) a mobile operation or b) they have their own (clean) premises, suitably equipped to produce top quality results (hopefully the latter).

Thanks for your comments. They are a mobile service and carry out this work at your home. They do offer a silver and gold service where you leave the car at their premises.

I have seen a car that they did the basic bronze and it looked very good and it had a remarkable shine to it.

Those prices are surprisingly low to me… £250 for a single stage paint correction *and* a ceramic coating is very cheap, even if it’s only a “1 year” coating. Especially when it’s only £100 of that for the correction. If this isn’t a retailer you know of and have seen results from, I’d be asking around for people’s recommendations. A lot of places offering cheap ceramic “coatings” are actually only offering a ceramic sealant rather than an actual coating.

For reference, the detailers I use are around the £350 mark for a paint correction without the ceramic. For a proper ceramic coating you’re looking at adding a good amount extra.

100% agree with this the coatings themselves are very expensive and those prices a very cheap any detail with  coating under 300 ish i would steer clear of tbh.

No disrespect but if did a quick Decontamination, an then I ran over your car with my DA and sprayed with auto finnesse aquacoat say and rinsed and dried,

Then charged you 250 quid and told you I had ceramic coated your car with a 2 year coating and done a full detail your wouldn't be any wiser tbh!

Did they even say what the coating was?

The OP also confirmed the prices were for the detailer’s mobile service - I’d personally not want my car ceramic coated with it parked outside where it could pick up airborne contaminants after application of the products and before they were fully cured. IMHO ceramic coating really needs to be done in an enclosed building where the car is protected from the elements and the ambient temperature can be controlled during the curing process. Also, isn’t the complete process for ceramic coating a car usually spread over two days? - pre-wash, wash, decontamination, second wash, paintwork correction, application of coating on day one, curing overnight and buffing off / finishing on day two?

As @The_Doc has said, it’s likely the detailer is actually applying a ceramic sealant rather than a ceramic coating, especially if the longevity of the product is 12 months (I’d expect a ceramic coating to have a longevity of more than 12 months).

@MarkHowells; if it is a ceramic coating that you were hoping to get, then maybe get the detailer to clarify whether it is a ceramic sealant or coating they’ll be applying and what the products actually are (brand, product names). Also, if you’ve not already done so, it might be worth doing some research on other detailing companies in your area and getting some alternative comparative quotes for a) having your car ceramic coated b) having a correction detail, including application of a ceramic sealant.

£500 package for extensive prep, full detailing and g-Tech ceramic coating incl wheels and exhausts plus engine bay valet. Overnighter at the premises to cure-off.

Worth it after 6 years of just washing.

That shine looks amazing.

Thanks for all of your advice, I will ask the detailer some questions on the things mentioned here and carry on looking around.

I have found out that it is a ceramic coating that I have been offered is called Infinity  https://www.infinitywax.com/products/synergy-2-year-ceramic-coating?_pos=1&_sid=992a994dd&_ss=r

I have done some research and this is what the Infinity Wax website says:-

"Synergy 2 is made from a high-content polysilazane ceramic resin with a blend of low VOC solvents that allow the coating to be easily spread and leveled. A polymer is added that bleeds through the ceramic and forms a top layer over the coating. This protects the vulnerable ceramic as it cures, and allows the coating to be applied to vehicles outdoors without causing failure. Synergy 2 when applied correctly and not washed for 7 days after application will reach 9H hardness just like the longer term coatings.

Synergy 2 allows enthusiasts and professionals to apply a durable ceramic coating outdoors. The problems associated with coating a car outside have been addressed by its sacrificial layer system. Think of this as a safety net that allows you to use a vehicle within 30 mins of application. The product has the ability to fill in surface defects such as wash marring and swirls quite dramatically and will leave the vehicle looking exceptional even without polishing. These benefits are further compounded by its hydrolysis curing method, which takes moisture from the air and uses that to create a chemical reaction that allows the coating to harden faster."

I have googled some reviews and found out that the Infinity Wax Synergy 2 is a ceramic coating which is generally well-regarded for its ease of use, durability, and ability to provide a glossy, hydrophobic finish. Users report it as a great option for paint protection, its also praised for its ability to help keep vehicles cleaner for longer and reduce the need for frequent washing.

The Infinity Wax Synergy 2 is generally considered a solid ceramic coating option, particularly for its ease of use and the glossy, durable finish it provides. While proper preparation and application are key, many users find it a great way to protect their car's paint and keep it looking its best.

Thanks for the update Mark.

There’s an interesting long term review by a forum member over on the Detailing World website of Infinity Wax Synergy Lite v2 (I’m assuming v2 is the latest version of the product) - the one year version. I don’t know whether the ‘Lite’ product is the one you’d be getting or if it’s a slightly different version to the one your detailer would be using, but the review is quite positive and its unique selling point seems to be less prep work required before application, it can be applied outdoors and there’s very little curing time required. It also seems to contain some sort of fillers that may ‘hide’ or improve the appearance of light blemishes in the paintwork.

So it does seem it’s an ideal product for a mobile detailer to use outdoors, and ideal for the DIY enthusiast who doesn’t have indoor space / facilities to apply a ceramic coating. I suppose the acid test is whether or not Infinity’s durability claims hold up - based on the review on Detailing World on a BMW X5 that gets very little love and attention, the product’s durability does seem to be holding up pretty well.

As a hobbyist detailer, I would be tempted to give it a go as a product I could apply myself. However, I would need to use up my supply of old school wax first, and that might take many years!

I had my black 8.5 done at a few days old. G techniq 5 year coating with Exo. Think it was around £470 and well worth it, especially on a black car. Although a little wasted as I sold the golf after 6 months! Pictures don’t really do it justice, but the finish was immaculate
