Title: Noisy / Clunky suspension
Post by: Monkeymagik on 02 May 2025, 22:43
Hi everyone, well 4 weeks into driving my new GTI I’m absolutely loving it although I have noticed that the suspension can be quite noisy and clunky when going over a poor patch of road (which seems to be everywhere these days). I’ve probably lost sight of these issues having been driving a couple of soft SUVs over recent years (Tiguan/XC40) so moving to a car with stiffer springs and 19 inch wheels probably explains it. Just wondered if this is normal.

My opinion would be that its pretty normal.
On my Clubsport I'd say its fine on decent roads but definitely a little bit noisier than the S3 on rougher roads.
They're basically the same cars but it might be down to less sound deadning in the Golf.
I noticed this when swapping over the warning triangle from the boot.
The S3 was packed with sound deadening behind the boot plastic panel, the Golf didnt seem to have any there.

Yes the GTI is quite firm and over our crappy roads you do get some slight noise. However, if you hear clear knocking or rubbing then that isn’t normal, there are a couple of technical bulletins at VW on the MK8 suspension, such as regreasing the lower bushes, and replacing the shock dust covers.
