Hi Everyone,
Sorry a total newb posting for the first time.
I’ve been looking at the below car and wondered if anyone on the forum had any info about number 167? Just wanting to know if it’s had a good life? Overall condition looks pretty good.

Don't know anything about the car, but it does look to be in nice condition. The thing that would put me of it is the lack of any factory extras....it seems to be standard spec! Mileage aside, it seems to be strong money for a car with no extras.

Looks a nice car. And the perfect spec (for me). Less can be more with these (but then I have a Clubsport S so would think that...)

It looks a nice tidy car. There were quite a few of these Ed40 without extras which were sold on lease. It kept the price down, which helped clear VW's stock of cars.
It's personal, but when I bought mine I specifically wanted heated seats, which were standard equipment on the regular GTi at the time.
If it may well have been a lease car, I would check out the early service history, with it being a VW main dealer sale, with warranty, there shouldn't be too much to worry about.
At that mileage, it would be nice to see the thermostat housing and waterpump having been changed, but as stated the implied warranty should cover that if it inevitably fails.

It looks a nice clean car and being a white 3 door manual car on the standard forged alloys it should be more appealing to the purist in a few years compared to a 5 door DSG on the optional wheels.
It’s strong money for that specification but you will get a VW warranty.
The best place to understand the car history is a FaceBook group ‘CS40 Owners (UK Edition 40 owners)’ - I would join that group and quote the advert and ask the same question, as there are only a handful of ED40 owners on this forum.
Better hurry as Exonian may trade in his MK8 Golf R for this car :laugh:

We all start somewhere as newbs! :cool: Starting at a Clubsport is what I would call a good start. Looks pretty similar to my car although you've got back seats so you're ahead on the extras! :grin:
I can't speak for 167 but would ensure that you clarify whether the car has working CarPlay. Years ago on my Clubsport S, I had to upgrade the USB port to allow Apple CarPlay (presumably applies to Android Auto as well) which was primarily so I could use Waze. The vintage nav is unbearable by modern standards and is about 17 years old now. Vertu show App-Connect on the head unit interface but that doesn't answer the very specific question of whether the USB port has been upgraded. The dealer will try and charge you up to £200 so I'd make it a condition of sale if you're buying the vehicle, on the assumption that's important to you.

(Not really, but it would be pretty much the perfect spec for me - 3 door, manual, white, basic spec and therefore more clubsporty)
There were a lot of cars punted out to VW dealers as unallocated builds towards the end of the production run. They had to either sell them by the 17 plate change or pre- register them, as 7.5 production started at that point they didn’t want unregistered model crossover.
Uptake on them was pretty slow as they were expensive compared to an R and didn’t benefit from the sales promotions such as VWFS deposit contributions. They were much more popular as overpriced second hand cars than overpriced new cars for reasons only known to enthusiast buyers.

They may have seemed expensive but it's not until you dig under their skin you find all of the costly parts only used on the clubsports that sets them aside, and many drivers are now seem prepared to spend to 'upgrade' their GTI's - hubs, subframe, discs, etc.

I didn't think the ED 40 had different hubs, subframe and discs....

The ad is removed, presumably sold and I can't remember if it had the Clubsport S seats but if iso, that would account for a substantial percentage of the value. Last time I checked, the CSS Recaros were going for £13k a pair. Subframe was only on the CSS.

That’s right, chassis wise the CS ED40 had different springs and slightly different geometry, which I presume could only have been the ‘Toe’ settings as the ‘Camber’ is fixed.
