Title: LED Vw logo fitted on my 45
Post by: king monkey on 17 April 2025, 18:28
Hi,

Not posted in years fellas, sorry. I’ve activity taken myself off social media etc but had to post this.

I fitted a LED Vw emblem to my mk8 Clubsport 45 yesterday. Looks really good. If anyone is interested, I can post some instructions here.

Was it a difficult retrofit?

Not at all really. Took a while to figure out but easier than doing the R paddles if that helps

Totally agree with that KingMonkey.  This is the best forum I've ever been on.  Genuine enthusiasm for all things GTI and always helpful without snardy comments which we can all do without.

I'll be sad to leave as I put down a deposit on a 2022 BMW M340d yesterday but I'll still pop in every now and then to see if my 4 years of Clubsport ownership can help someone else.  I'll probably spend more time here than any BMW forum as previous experience there has not been good.  It's good to have you back. Have you got any pics of the new LED?  I'm still interested!

I used to be a regular on a LR Discovery forum, absolutely terrible in terms of insults and politically opinionated drivel, this place is great👍

Good to see you’re still kicking about here Michele, and I really like the illuminated logo.
The mk8 front looks a bit gappy without the roundel lit up.
I saw a how to by an American owner some time ago, there was a bit of wire splicing involved.

BillSan, please do stay, and maybe you’ll return to VW ownership one day.
I’m a big fan of the BMW straight 6 Diesels. Lovely brawny power-plant.
I bet that one doesn’t sneak under the £40k VED though??

Sadly not Exonian. As a three year old car however someone else has paid most of it. I'll have to pay it for two more years and it's £610 this year. First time for me but seemingly we'll all be paying it very soon.

I love the LED badge King Monkey.  It looks especially great on your white GTI.  Could be a bit too much on a darker car, but each to their own.

Hi Andy! Good to hear that me posting didn’t make you run a mile! I agree that I think the gap looks a bit odd on the mk8. I used that guide by the American owner in part but had to change a new bits as it wasn’t entirely accurate. Probably down to spec differences in euro and US models. Great starting point though.

Glad to hear you like the badge. I honestly think it’s one of those things that people will love or think it’s awful!

Wasn't all the sensors in the the badge on the 8? That's why they moved the sensors down the bumper in the 8.5 because of the illumination?

Yeah. When you take the badge off the ACC sensor is underneath. Just have to be careful not to move it.

ah ok, and the sensors still work with the new illuminated badge? Are you telling me they didn't have to put a big ugly black box in the bumper for the 8.5?

I don't know what the reason was for that actually.

There were thefts of the sensor, but not sure that the mk7 style "box" was any less or more nickable.

I suspect it was a cost cutting measure - the badge based one was too expensive vs the box.

I'd be very cautious / hesitant about messing with the front VW badge on the MK8 tbh! As we know too well on these forums, these cars are hypersensitive to the most minor glitch in its multitude of sensors, so I think you're taking a big risk of getting into bing-bong hell for the sake of an illuminated badge.

For example... my Dad's Tiguan was driving him crazy for months, steering wheel replaced twice, dealers had his car for weeks at a time. Eventually they disassembled the front VW badge and found it was full of spider webs! Cleaned it out and finally the errors cleared. Also, 2 friends of mine with MK8 GTI's have had to get parking sensors replaced on front bumpers - allegedly these sensors will throw errors if they get the slightest damage (e.g. from a stone chip).

Odd. I'd say the box is more nickable as it's obvious, also feel it's prone to getting damaged more easily. Best things they did on the 8 was get rid of it, and now it's back. humph.

There’s been quite a few forum members over on www.seatcupra.net forum who’ll attest to that. They’ve had no luck claiming under warranty either as false errors triggered by a stone chipped parking sensor is deemed to be damage [to the sensor] by an external influence.

I'd never seen how exactly the radar was behind the badge, but from a video i saw on how to take the badge off...

So its basically the same "box" thing but just hidden.

My concern with the illuminated badge would be whether it was as radar penetrable given that its not designed to be

I was told by a VW mechanic that the sensor behind the badge was moved down to accommodate the new illuminated badge , not sure i would want to endure the wrath of Bongs on my clubby if i messed about with it...

I'm with you @Aidey, no way I'd want to risk upsetting the very moody and temperamental nature of the MK8.

Personally I always thought it looked tacky too a bit like Halfords had had a play with it and I wouldn't want it anyway.

Having said that I applaud the OP for braving the mod and think it looks good on the white car.

Tbh I didn’t even think of the bongs before I decided to fit the badge. Think that shows how few problems I’ve had.
The sensor has been absolutely fine since doing the badge, no issues at all (famous last words eh). You really don’t have to touch the sensor at all. I certainly wouldn’t have unplugged it as some of the videos show. There’s plenty of room to do the work without unplugging everything.
The worst bit was taking the front section of trim off but once you work out where the clips are, it’s pretty painless.
