Title: Persistent Humming/Droning Noise on Mk7.5 GTD (DSG) – Help Needed!
Post by: ajwgtd on 12 April 2025, 15:00
Hi all,

Looking for some advice or shared experiences to help track down an annoying noise issue on my 2018 MK7.5 Golf GTD DSG.

The Issue
There’s a coarse humming/droning noise that kicks in around 40mph+, becomes more noticeable at motorway speeds, and doesn’t change when:

Coasting in neutral
Steering left/right
Applying brakes
Changing gears or throttle input

It’s not overpowering, but noticeable enough to feel like something isn’t right.

What’s Been Done So Far

Replaced all 4 tyres with new Bridgestone Turanza's (to rule out mixed tyre noise)
Rear driver’s side wheel bearing replaced (initial suspicion)
Rear wheels rotated front to back – noise moved to the front passenger side
That wheel was found to have a flat spot, so was straightened
Noise still there, so all front wheel bearings replaced
Ran the car on a ramp up to 60mph – front wheel seen bouncing, even after balancing
Still no change – same noise, same speed range

Other Checks/Observations
Tyres properly inflated and balanced
Bearings are genuine or quality aftermarket
Wheel still shows up/down bounce on ramp
No obvious vibration through the steering wheel
Sound feels like it travels through the chassis rather than being directional

Suspected Next Steps / Possibilities
Based on what I’ve read and advice so far, I’m wondering if it could be:
Inner CV joint wear (noise is consistent with drivetrain speed, and GTDs + DSGs are known for this)
Subframe alignment or slight movement (maybe needs bolts re-seating?)
Worn suspension bushes (especially trailing arms or strut tops)
Warped brake disc or dragging caliper (though there’s no vibration or heat issue)
Worn engine/gearbox mount transmitting extra NVH at speed

What I’m Looking For
Anyone experienced something very similar on a Golf GTD, GTI, or MQB-platform car?
Is inner CV joint the likely next step?
Could it be wheel hop from suspension rather than a rotating part?
Anyone resolved this kind of mystery hum successfully?

Any advice, personal experience, or even “here’s what it was on my car” would be massively appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

I'd focus on the only thing that has made a difference - moving the wheels around.
Swap them back again, does it move again? If so, wouldn't the wheel(s) be the issue?
Anyone local with a set of 5/112 fitment you could borrow?
Got a space saver you could run instead of the known suspicious wheel?
