Had a reconditioned gearbox fitted to the mk2 couple of months ago. The gearbox the garage fitted seems to have longer gears than the original one, for example i can now get 90mph in 3rd at 6k revs and 110 in 4th. Mentioned this to the garage (mate of mine who owns the place) and he recons it was out of a golf but couldn't be sure it was a gti, he even said that the gear boxes were aslo used in Austin Maestro's!!! Bit pis*ed off really as it doesn't feel as torquey as the original but is now great for overtaking saxo's at 70mph as i can leave it in 3rd instead of changing to 4th.
-
I take it u got a GTI...8v or 16v?
My valver will do 90mph on the red line (6750rpm) in 3rd and 110 at the same place in 4th....my old car used to do 110 on the limiter in 4th but I best not mention what that was... :embarassed:
-
i thought the red line was 7200 on a valver?!
-
thats the limiter!! I mean the start of the red line...
-
ah i see what you mean fella!
my first valver at first would rev past 6k rpm!! which was a bit crap but then after i changed the spark plugs it revved properly!! odd!! but then after a while the dizzy packed in as i dnt think it was used to taking such abuse!
-
Yeah, mines a gti 8v. 5th gear now feels almost like an economy gear were it feels flat as a fart when you floor it, not like it used to.
-
they used to call it that on early mark 2 passats (economy gear)!!
The only thing i can suggest is that they might of put a 16valve gear box in, with longer ratio's!! but i am no mechanic so i dnt know!!
-

 mine was crap when i first got it..had done 40k in 9 years, being driven by some old couple in there late 50's when I got it...smoked for a month when i thrashed it til it all cleared out!!

hmm..how much did u pay for the recon? I had mine rebuilt and the diff bolted to strengthen it up for £450...

Im pretty sure 16v's have got shorter ratio 5th gears than 8v's....dont quote me on that tho!! :undecided:

what possesed a middle aged couple to buy a valver!!
-
Not a clue...glad they did tho cos its got 153k on the clock now and still going strong..i hope :lipsrsealed:

That proves i am no mechanic, but i always thought that they built them with longer ratio's through out in order for a faster top speed
My valver has done that sort of milage, and it too seem to be going well! except a bloody knocking and clunking noise from the wheel arch when i put on right lock!!!

How much did i pay?.....this is the best bit. At first my mate who owns the garage told me the head gasket had gone. Thought this was strange coz on my service history it said the head gasket was changed 3 thousand miles previously. Anyway he sent the head to get skimmed etc and re-built engine. Then i got a phone call saying it the gear box was also fooked as it had two large holes in it which actually caused the breakdown. "so it didn't need a head gasket then" i asked, the reply was my head gasket had also gone! bollo##s  Â£1100 quid poorer and a distinct impression i had been ripped off. No longer see my mate anymore.

Sorry to here that mate...it's a shame there are so many people still about who feel the need to rip people off

Not good mate, not good! should take them to trading standards!?
-
Yeah especially when you think i could have got a 16v run-out for not much more than the repair on my 8v cost me!!
-
thats true!!
my valver only cost me a grand!
-
mine cost me 2k..but that was just over 2yrs ago
-
urs was low milage tho wasnt it and looks really tidy aswell
mine had 155k on it and has few dings on it!
-
had 112k when i got it...
first 4 yrs of its life it was a company car and covered 72k...then the old folk got a hold of it and nursed it thru til i got my hands on it
-
valvers have longer ratios think its the diff with the main difference there geared up as it s a more powerful engine than a 8v so the gears are longer were as the 8v is shorter to create more torque thats why 1.1s and 1.3 s are so fast off the line short ratios
-
How good would that of been back in 1990, having a valver as a company car, i think they cost the equivalent of 15k when they were brand new!
we have golf company cars, mark 4's and 5's most of them are TDI's and some 2.0 GTI's, sometimes i pretend i need to go out for something but really just go for a random drive!!

I know...I would have been out everyday caning the arse off it down the motorway...and taking the 'scenic' route home..
-
exactly and back in those days they werent really assed about speed limits, i.e no speed cameras and policement hiding in bushes with hair dryers!
-
get the gearbox code of the bottom of the bell housing and ill tell you what the ratio's are in comparison to the standard 16v 2Y box

finally..someone who knows what they are on about..

I got a 4T coded box on my 8v, i think it would be a great box if i had 150+BHP as it has the eco 5th gear. 1st and 2nd are close ratio and then from third up it gets pretty long. I can reach 96MPH at 6000rpm in 3rd.
I would ideally have a proper 8V box ACD preferably AUG box and change 5 for my 4T fifth gear. MFA reads 50ish MPG on motorways. At 70MPH the engine is at 2800RPM in 5th and 100MPH im at just under 4000RPM. All this i s with 195/50/15
-
dont the valvers have bigger drive shaft cups than the 8v and then the 1.8 carb drivers are even smaller. if so you mechanic would of had to change the cups and seals. just ask him.
-
Thats weird, i tested this theory last night in my 'driver', i can get 82mph in 3rd and 112mph in forth, and off the clock in 5th. (all on a private road!) I know my 'driver' can keep up with tweaked 8v GTI's and easily pull away from standard ones but i didnt expect it to do same speeds in gears as GTI's?!
Maybe my speedo is out?
-
my Driver (1.6) will do just over 90 in 3rd.....
Private road ain't long enough to test 4th and 5th.....
-
Get your bloody gearbox codes and work it all out for yourself properly instead of all these myth speeds
http://www.scirocco.org/gears/
golf speedo's are innaccurate and get worse the higher the speed, using the above link will give you your real speed
