According to press reports in the first few months of 2025 the cost of car insurance has dropped by about 15-20% over the last year.
My insurance will be due for renewal in June.
Is the drop just insurance industry press propaganda or is it reflected in real life GTI renewals? It would be good to know if anybody renewing in the first 3 months has seen a drop.

Last year paid £560, this year £419, so yep I’d agree. I work for a commercial broker and we are also seeing a much smaller rate of premium inflation as well.
-
Mine went up again this year
-
My initial renewal quote was double the previous year!!!
Ended up paying about the same as the previous year after shopping around.
-
My quote for the year was higher so I shopped around and saved £200.
-
Sounds like a bit of a mixed bag so far. Still shows that shopping around is essential though.
Hopefully a few more replies will paint a more complete picture.
-
My saving was from shopping around, if I’d renewed with the same insurer, renewal would only have been £20 cheaper than current premium.
-
£440 down to £320 this year, but only after a brief discussion with the insurer. The renewal quote was higher

Really disappointed with LV. I've been with them for a few years now but while everyone else's insurance seems to be coming down mine has gone up from £288 last year to £344. Phoned them and they were only willing to knock off £20 so I cancelled.
Got a quote for £230 with a lower excess from Saga. Only problem is that the missus is now taunting me relentlessly calling me a geriatric, OAP etc.

IMHO loyalty means nothing to insurance companies, other than they probably see loyal customers as easy targets for premium increases.
I switched from LV to Aviva this year. I’d been with LV for four years and this year they put my renewal premium down by £18. Aviva quoted me £84 less than LV’s price for this year on a like for like basis (e.g. cover, add-ons, excess, annual mileage etc.), so it was an easy decision to switch.
I did get some quotes on a comparison site that were cheaper than Aviva but they were from companies I’d not heard of before. I’ve been with Aviva before and have always been very pleased with both their customer service and claims service, so for me it was a case of better the devil you know .

After many years with LV my experience is the same. They are getting more expensive and less competitive. My house insurance has literally doubled in the last two years and I have moved to another insurer. I have a feeling my car insurance will be with someone else too when I get my renewal quote in a few weeks.
-
As suspected LV incresed their renewal price by 10% when it came through for me last week. That is despite having 6 years NCD rather than 5 and despite it being reported that premiums should be slightly lower.
As it is my GTI is being replaced by an M340d in a few weeks, so my insurance cost is going to be higher but that is fine. I've used comparison sites to find an insurer who will cover me for 60% less than LV have quoted for the M340d. I haven't heard of the company offering the lower quote ("Prima") but they are on all the comparison sites and seem to have good online reviews. For a 60% reduction I'd be crazy not to move.

Ouch!
I am up for renewal in August, hoping its lower.
Although, oddly, had my re-newal quote through from Directline for my home insurance and is 39.23% higher than last year! I haven't even claimed.
Needless to say, I won't be renewing.

My Directline home insurance has gone down this year. Car insurance, not due until the end of August...

That is really odd

My renewal came through today, up by about £90 on last year and the previous two or three years about the same. I'm retired so no commuting, full no claims and no convictions. I can't see how they can justify it. Went and got some quotes via those cheeky meerkats and Darwin, part of Direct Line, was over £300 cheaper. Only obvious disadvantage was an extra £100 compulsory excess.

Darwin Customer Service were pretty helpful when like an idiot, I gave the wrong date for a bump the wife had a couple of years ago meaning I had x2 claims on the claims database rather than the one🙄

That's promising, thanks.

Unfortunately they don’t have to justify it. We all contribute towards the cost of the claims of other policyholders, whether we’ve claimed or not. Additionally, if the insurance company hasn’t hit their profit target so aren’t able to make a big fat dividend payment to their shareholders, then they’ll increase prices .
The Darwin price looks very attractive compared to your existing insurer’s renewal quote in spite of the extra £100 compulsory excess, and that increased excess only comes into play if you’re unfortunate enough to have an ‘at fault’ claim. £90 more or £300 cheaper, albeit with an extra £100 excess? - an easy decision IMHO.

So, good news to report from my part, Last year I paid £326 and this year is went down tro £217 very happy.
-
Managed to reduce my premium by £150 so another happy bunny. Retired so reduced my mileage which probably helped.
-
I've been getting a lot of quotes on the Meerkat website as I ponder what to change my car for. Given me and my situation is fixed, the only difference is in the cars and there have been lots of odd quotes (for good and bad). The strangest so far has been what has generated the cheapest quote, a 2012, Aston Martin 4.7 V8 Vantage which was under £400!

Saved the same on the second gti so can afford a city break or similar :smiley:I've been getting a lot of quotes on the Meerkat website as I ponder what to change my car for. The Aston sounds fun. Out of interest and encouraged by my grandson found quotes for jag xkr last year that were reasonable.
