Hi all,
Anyone know how to update the satnav maps on a Golf 8. I have the Discover Media system, have downloaded the latest maps, formatted my USB C pen as NTFS & exFat but nothing works. It is stuck on DB Version 25.1.
Any suggestions would be appreciated
Cheers

Hi Craig. I'm sorry I can't help but isn't it just easier to use one of the alternatives such as Waze or google maps?
Personally I never use the VW Nav as it's nowhere near as good as the alternatives.
The live traffic etc is so much better on Waze.
I'd also be scared to do any updates to an already temperamental OS. And I bet the files are absolutely huge.

Yeah you are right - waze is better, I am just a bit anal with stuff like that.
Oh and the update is 29 gb
Cheers

OK understood. I didn't want to come across as rude.
I'm sure I updated my 7.5 the way you're doing it but I wouldn't even bother these days just use the other offerings.
But I understand that you may want to keep the native system up to date as its just one of those thing we like to do.
Anyway keep the thread updated if you succeed, it may push me to try as I'm a tech geek myself and I like things how they're meant to be.

Yeah I will update if I get it sussed. Car is going for a service in a few weeks so may ask what I am doing wrong.
Cheers for your replies

Should be ntfs.
Never tried to do it to my Mk8 (before my three years of carnet ran out it was done ota) but I suspect you have to choose a menu command to trigger it...

Is there a later version?
Mine is also showing Version 25.1 but I wasn't worried because I thought this meant it was a January 2025 map download. My car was registered in March 2024 and I haven't downloaded anything manually, so unless my dealership updated the system when my car was serviced a few weeks ago, then it must be an OTA update that is currently installed.

If your car is under 3 years old it should have the subscription still that enables OTA map updates.
Its only when it runs out you'd have to use the manual process (or pay VW an arm and a leg for more online services)
The map updates only come out about once a year anyway...

Does anyone bothered paying for connect plus?
If they made it cheaper they would have more people getting it.

No, it's stupidly over priced.
Tbh there's hardly any point in vw having nav of their own. A lot of OEM's provide just AA/CP.

Absolutely not. £129 for 12 months to me is obscene. My car has just hit three years old so I received the email reminder that this fantastic service was ending its free period and I now had to pay if I wanted to continue to benefit from it. It was then I realised that not on one single occasion had I used it over the three years of my ownership. What irks me is that my car is in the high tax bracket so as it was over the threshold at purchase point and its things like this that should be free for the entire duration of my ownership. Rant aside some of the more useful aspects of that app are still available subscription free such as car location etc. So you'd only be paying for some data and that vent thing or whatever.

The crazy thing is that they don't unsubscribe your car from the data network... oh no, they WANT that telemetry data, its got (resale) value.
So they are charging you all of that money for...
Well its not the money they pay the mapping people for, because you can download the maps for free yourself....
