Morning guys.
Picked up a 2019 Gti PP yesterday and on the way home noticed, what can possibly be described as rear wheel bearing/droning noise.
At first, i thought it may have been the tyres but also, after digging around, wheel bearing failure isnt all that common on these it seems?
Car is on 19" Brescia with Pirelli Pzero tyres that arent all that that old so i am a bit confused!
Is it still a thing where i take the car for a long drive and at the end, feel the centre of the wheels to see if any of them is hot, meaning possible bearing? Thing is, i dont feel that it is a 'grinding' noise as such.
Also, in all honesty, really dont like the Pzeros much so will be changing them at some point in the future but budget is a bit tight at the mo.

It may be sawtooth / stepped wear of the inner edge of the rear tyres - not uncommon on cars with independent rear suspension and the noise can be mistaken for worn wheel bearings. I had it on a mk5 Golf and initially thought it was a bad wheel bearing.
If you run your hand around the inside edge of the tyre you may feel the sawtooth wear. In particularly bad cases - like in the picture below - you can also see it.

Had this on my 7.5 which was what SRGTD said below. Two new rear tyres sorted it out.

Pirelli p-zeros are quite noisy anyway in my experience. Given the mostly low temperatures and being a summer tyre, even more likely to be noisy. A damaged bearing is also entirely possible, I've had that from hitting a pothole. If you have different tyres on the front or newer, might be worth swapping them all around to see if the problem goes/moves.

Was beginning to wonder if the Mrs's A1 had a wheel bearing gone as the noise on some roads was awful.
Had 4 new tyres fitted anyway, as they were due, and sure enough the rears were sawtoothed when the wheels were removed.
Could tell when driving away within 15secs the noise had dissapeared.

Well, just been poking around and it has tyres on the rear manufactured in week 44 2019.
It’s odd as they are barely worn and the car has done 55k so hod knows where anyone would get tyres that old!
They are all matching Pzeros though.
Had a feel and couldn’t really feel anything but at my age, flapping about on the floor underneath a car is a challenge.
We have a local Protyre place who have always done my tyres so I might drop in there for them to have a Quick Look at.

Hard to see it when the wheels are on the car.
Mine had about 50k on them and loads of visible tread (the rears on a mk7 really do not wear much) but once off the car you could see the inside edge badly beaten up.
Get someone to take them off and look

In all honesty I was going to change the tyres anyway so I might just get the rears done for now and see how that goes.
Just reading around it seems the PS4S is the tyre of choice for 19” wheels but they are quite expensive.
Any love for Goodyear Eagle F1 Assy 6?
I have had them before albeit on 18” wheels and found them quite good with noise and grip etc, and are much cheaper at the moment with various offers around, but wasn’t sure how good they are in 19 variant.

I have GY assy 6 in 235/35/19 on mine. They are fine, an improvement over the Pirelli P Zero previously fitted. PS4S on the Pork & they work well, I don't think I would feel the benefit over the GY ASS6 the way I drive the Golf.

So, just been in and they have said the rear tyres are stepped on the inside edge so are going to order a new pair.
What i did find was that when i got home, i felt the brake discs all around and the rears were warm, but the fronts were absolutely red hot, and my journey didn't really included a lot of braking but i guess thats the nature of the beast!

Most of the braking is done on the front and they are big old brakes. Always hot when you stop even if you've been pootling...
Glad I was right about the tyres!

Stepping is common apparently from mk5 - mk7, particularly if you do lots on motorway driving, VW are aware of the issue apparently

Forgot to update!
Rear tyres replaced with the Assy6 and the car is a million times better.
I should do the fronts really but they are almost brand new so will get some wear out of them first but also keep an eye on any offers in the future.

Had this recur on my mk6. Took longer to be a problem after full wheel alignment and new tyres.
