Title: Battery low voltage
Post by: Usedit67 on 16 March 2025, 12:49
My 2020 PP is starting fine and stop start is working fine. However, my battery voltage seems to always be low. Today, voltage was 11.9v after sitting for 2 days. Even after a run, it's rarely more than 12.3 V. I've only recently bought the car (VW Approved) so if the battery is on the way out, I'd look to having it replaced. I know that the car has some type of intelligent charging so maybe it just maintains enough charge? I've checked with the engine running and the alternator seems good. Any advice appreciated. Cheers

2019 plate with 33k miles - exactly the same.  Thought it needed replacing as there seems to be a red indicator light on all the time. Garage tested it and said it was fine just needed a good charge. Bought a charger off amazon, charged it up over 48 hours. Checked it again a couple of days later and it’s right down low again.  That said, not had any issues at all so just ignoring it now. I only do 1-2 trips per week, no more than 50 miles a week.

Or just code it out, using OBDeleven. I hate SS. PITA. So used a 10 credit option and turned it off permantantly.

Back along (early part of 2025) my 2018 seemed to half stall randomly when coming to a stop as if the SS was active (although I switch it off every journey), believe there's a service bulletin which recommends battery replacement in such cases, that done and never seen the problem since..

Can't be coded out on later model years though 👍🏻

2013 gti here with stop start coded out for many years still on the original  EFB battery and it’s healthy ! Drive the car more to give it a good recharge. If you’re only doing short trips your battery will be toast in 3-4 years. My wife also has a golf and she’s on her 3rd battery on a 2016.

Just jumping on this, have a MK7.5 PP 5 years old and got a low battery on Sunday and it wouldn't start. Jumped it and it has worked all week but took it to Halfords for a test and they said it's at 48% and needs replaced.

It has been running fine this week and had it in at VW for an MOT today, vehicle health report showed no issues with the battery. Went to start it to leave VW and the battery had died again and needed to get them to jump it!

I can get a new battery from Halfords but wondering will they code it? The guys at VW said you don't need to do this but tbh not sure I trust them!

The following from Halfords website - Halfords Start/Stop batteries in some vehicles require the battery to be registered with the on-board computer system, so we strongly recommend professional fitting.

It needs doing so perhaps call the branch in advance and check.

Thanks mate, will call them. VW wanted £360 for a new one, maybe see how it is over the weekend and try a garage that I normally use.

I changed my battery a couple of years ago as the Banner EFB was dying and my dashcam (parking mode) was putting too much strain on it.

Swapped it out for a Bosch AGM Type 096 S5A08 from Tanya Batteries. You can code via OBD11, basically you just need to 'tell' the car it has a new battery. If you have OBD11/VCDS its pretty easy.

Got my replacement battery supplied and fitted into my GTD back in 2021. They coded it too.

Almost 5 years down the line and no issues.

I've just gone down a similar route, and ordered an Exide battery from Tayna. 760 CCAs I think it is, EFB.

After 2 weeks on charge over Xmas, the one on the car, wouldn't go above 12.3v.

Even though, car is driving fine with no issues, I now consider the battery to be failing.

So, once the new one arrives, I'll swap it out and get OBD11 to register it.

Will be doing DSG fluid at the same time, so it's got to come out anyway.
