Hi all,
Just a quick question, will my 2016 Mk7 Golf GTD be able to use a wireless Android Auto / Carplay dongle? If so, can anyone recommend a decent one please.
Many thanks.

Thanks for the swift reply. So basically, these adaptors will work in a Mk7 Golf 2016?
Any reason why you opted for the one you chose?
Thanks for your time.

I picked up a really cheap one from AliExpress, think it was £7 and works great on my GTD 95% of the time, occasionally the screen comes on dim but the functions still work, my phone just would not connect via the cable (android). I'm pretty sure they will all come from the same place!

Thanks for your reply.
I can't get my 2016 GTD to connect via cable either so opted for the wireless adaptor. I actually ordered one now also from AliExpress. Hope it will be ok.

Hi,
The adaptor turned up today but fails to connect, it does try but then cancels itself.
I connected my phone to my daughter's 2019 Audi Q3 to see if it worked via a cable and it did. I then tried using the adaptor but it failed again.
My daughter has an iphone that won't connect to her car with a cable (I don't know why) so tried the adaptor on hers. I thought it was connecting but it was my phone that connected !!!!!
I turned my phone off and got her phone to work with the adaptor too. So it seems like my 2016 Golf GTD won't connect to the adaptor so I lose and my daughter wins a new present :-(

Daft question.
Does your car have working CarPlay/ Android auto. It wasn’t standard fit to all till after Mk7.5 iirc. If not fitted/ “enabled” then no dongle will work for you. The dongle gives wireless connection of phone to car Media player, ie without using usb lead.
You Might need see if it can be enabled on your car first.
MEANT TO BE HELPFUL.

Hi, thanks for the reply.
Yes, you are right, how do I know if Android Auto / Carplay is enabled on my car? I know it has never connected via USB cable (data cable) so that is why I gambled on wireless adaptor.
From the research I did, a 2016 Golf GTD shoud be fitted with Auto / Carplay, I can only guess mine wasn't! Is there a way to enable it?
Many thanks to all replies and any more which may help will be greatly appreciated.

I understand cars before 2015 did not have CarPlay. Then it became possible to buy it as an option new. Or it can be “enabled” by a dealer or similar.
This Andrew Chappel vid might help, even tho he’s discussing the R.

Thanks for your reply.
I have entered info into CHATGPT and it's saying I have everything installed but not activated.
I need to get VW dealership to provide an activation key (at a cost) then have it installed.
My question is: does this HAVE to be done by VW or can any other service carry it out?
Thanks.
