Title: Cracked brake discs?
Post by: wrighty79 on 21 February 2025, 11:47
Had these VBT discs fitted along with some ferodo DS pads at awsome gti in December 2023 and noticed today that they look like their cracked in multiple places. Do you think I should be chasing up awsome as its not much over a year since?

Wouldn't hurt to approach Awesome, but I suspect they will say over a year old and wear and tear.

Has your car been sat idle for a while??

Are they cracks?

It's hard to tell from the photos, but it looks like corrosion where the pad has been stuck on the braking surface. As Madstaff suggests, maybe from standing idle for a while?

I have cracked quality Porsche discs before after considerable track use and they never cracked so perfectly in a straight line. Your line/mark only seems to be on the brake surface where a pad may have been in contact?

I would say no, they are not cracks and are just lines of corrosion/brake dust from them sitting idle.

Pic 4 definitely looks like where the pads have been in contact with the disc.

Certainly looks like pad staining rather than cracks.
Easy way to check would be to shine a torch on the rear/inner face of the disc when laid on the floor under the car peering outwards to see if there are marks in exactly the same place as on the outer faces.
Cracking is normally less neat than that.

Italian tune up should sort it.

I agree with the posts.  Assuming its Performance pack brakes and they look like these. Try to picture how they would sit against the disc, both the outside edge of the friction material and the gap in the centre.  If the footprint fits all is good.
