Title: Deleting the resonator delete
Post by: japes1275 on 15 February 2025, 00:36
My car came from the VW dealer with a resonator delete which to be honest I quite like most of the time. But sometimes it’s a bit obtrusive (like when I come home from night shift at 3am!) so I’m thinking of putting it back to standard.

If I buy a resonator box that’s been removed (seen a couple on eBay) is it just a case of removing the delete pipe and using the clamps that came with the kit? Hopefully the section removed will always be the same length?!

Anyone got one cluttering up their garage they want to get rid of?!

Thanks

I have been thinking of doing this but have the same dilemma, live in a small cul de sac and do mostly nights on the railway. Don't want the neighbours complaining or waking the kid D's up when I get home, but I have no idea how loud it would really be. Can't really base a decision from videos on you tube.
Do you have to inform insurance of a Res delete?

Yes, IMHO you would need to inform them.

If you check the small print of your insurance policy, there’ll most likely be a clause that requires you to tell them of any modifications. Some will go on expand to on this and provide their definition of a modification (what is considered a modification can vary from one insurance company to another), which is usually anything that changes the factory spec of a car when it was originally built. Having said that, I don’t think an insurance company needs to know if you’ve made a ‘modification’ such as fitting a set of mud flaps - which strictly speaking has changed the factory spec of the car!.

Modifications can be a bit of a grey area and I’d say if in doubt, then always declare it as not doing so can be considered as insurance fraud - i .e. dishonestly obtaining insurance without declaring all the risk information for the insurance company to adequately assess the risk and charge their ‘correct’ premium. Insurance fraud is a criminal offence which if convicted, would need to be declared on future insurance applications and could affect a person’s ability to get insurance cover in future at an affordable price.

I’ve got a resonator from my 7.5 sat in the shed (I think). Can confirm and get back to you?

Oryx3dr, that would be great thanks!

Yes, by the letter of the law I would think it best to tell your insurance company about a res delete. I was very surprised that VW sold it like that, one of the downsides of buying a car without seeing it, I didn’t notice till I started it up to drive away! When I questioned them about it later they said they didn’t class it as a modification as it wasn’t a full replacement system. Probably wouldn’t wash with an insurance company though.
