Title: Rear camera image quality.
Post by: Carlosfandango on 11 January 2025, 19:09
Why is the rear camera image so poor on my 8.5? Is it ‘normal’? Are others experiencing the same?, the front and side cameras on the area view system are (although not amazing) a much better image. Just wondering if it’s worth taking it in or not? Id rather not have to tbh!

I’ve just got the standard (not area view) rear view camera and it’s perfectly clear. Do you still get the actual ‘rear view’ from the boot badge with yours?

Yes, thought I’d included a picture!🤦‍♂️ the image is worse than it looks in the picture here, no sharp outlines at all, very mottled in fact. The side and front images are much better.

Maybe with the larger (higher resolution?) screen in the mk8.5 Golf, the resultant image just appears poorer than on previous generation cars.

I thought that may be the case too, as I did read some similar comments somewhere else on here, (couldn’t find that thread). But, the front and side images are much sharper,, and when it wasn’t flickering 🤨 the Mk8 camera image was much like the quality of the front camera on the 8.5, so presumably it cannot simply be the resolution, odd that the image cannot be adjusted any more either?!

Mine has area view and I haven’t noticed it being poor quality. Will check it out tomorrow and report back.

Thanks, it’s just the REAR image on my car that is suspect, the front and side images are fine.

The rear camera view in my 8.5 seems OK..

Thanks for that @sipj, your picture definitely looks better than mine, which also has a strange movement around the outer 1/4 of the image, much like rippling water.

Thanks @DrivenToDistraction, that is a far clearer image than I can get! 🤔

Have you inspected the camera for dirt or possibly a protective clear film left on it from new?

Yes, the first thing I did was check it was clean, I didn’t notice a protective film on it, but that’s a good shout, I will check again specifically for that.

You probably can't change it but there is a setting in the camera setup for resolution.... and thats to do with the screen its going to be displayed on.

I don't know under what circumstances your car might be built wrong like that, but its a possibility...

Thanks Fred, that’s certainly something to think about, and would be worth a mention if I take it in to be looked into.

My mk8 rear camera at night is awful and will also check if anything is on the lens as I haven't thought of that. I have also put this poor night time quality down to the fact the rear reverse lights are a small pathetic size compared to the larger lights I had on my previous car, therefore very little illumination.

Weird, mine is fine. Its hard to see much if you've got the brake lights on but ok otherwise.

I live in a road with no street lights and reverse out of the drive, can see perfectly well on my camera...
