Title: Online Services in 8.5
Post by: sipj on 10 January 2025, 15:28
Hi all.

Had anyone had issues with the car connecting to the online services.  All was working well, but now the globe icon on the screen is greyed out and map/traffic alerts, internet radio, Spotify etc. no longer work and the mobile app is not updating to the latest status.  I have an active contract for just under two years.

Thanks

Hi,

Same thing happened to me, stopped working yesterday afternoon. I called support via the car and got cut off before I could talk to anyone. Ended up playing around with the settings and it started working again. From memory I disconnected my phone and re-connected it to establish a hotspot. It could have just been co-incidence that it started working and not down to anything I did.

Thanks.  Will give that a try later.

Not an 8.5 but an 8: mine threw an intermittent fit the last few days with the globe greyed out and the SOS module trying to phone VW assist non stop.
Was fine again lunchtime but booked into VW for a look

Well disconnected the phone and the globe came straight back. No idea why. Let’s hope it’s a one off!

This may be unrelated but I have a problem with MyVW at the moment. Same yesterday. I am trying to check something in the online user manual (the 8.5 only comes with a very basic pamphlet) but just get "content cannot be displayed at this time..". I can log in using my username/password but that's about it. The stored VIN is correct so it must be a VW server problem? Why you can't just download a pdf (when the site is actually working!) is beyond me.

Imagine how difficult it'll be for a new owner when the car is 10 years old and VW cares even less than they do now...

Some forum members over on the Seat / Cupra forum have also been having problems, so that suggests it might be a wider VAG problem rather than just a VW issue.

Agree. The prospect of buying and owning a 10 year old tech-laden car with obsolete tech fills me with dread. VW often don’t care when a car’s still within the original warranty period, so they won’t give two hoots about owners of old(er) VW’s.

I also couldn’t access the online manuals yesterday. Must be a wider problem. Would be nice if they allowed us to download a PDF copy.

Forum members over on golfmk8.com and seatcupra.net forums have also been experiencing connectivity issues, so yes, it does seem to be a wider issue.

The mk7(.5) was the last of the relatively future proof Golfs along with a few other current VW group models that still run the same basic architecture as the 7.5

Just imagine the raft of Chinese EV’s coming over now and the likelihood of having any support or ability to repair faulty modules in five years never mind ten.

With reference to the Chinese brands, That’s a very good point!

The later 7.5's had some online tech which already has gone obsolete with the shutting down of the mobile networks it used...

The problem with online anything is that it will be ended at some point. Only fully local technology is remotely age resistant.
