Coolant temp sensor incorrect reading.
blocked coolant pipe or rad somewhere.
Thermostat faulty.
Blocked Heather matrix.
Expansion tank silica bag split.

Some ides to get you started

GTI specialist told me that whilst not common, they have seen a few.

We deal with supply of automotive garages daily and yeah it is an issue with VW and the entire VAG range. Not often but you don't want it to be you. Heater matrix blocked on an Audi recently at a garage was 4 figures to sort apparently.

It seems to be pretty normal for VW dealers to deny certain issues experienced by forum members are known problems, so I’d always take such comments by VW techs with a pinch of salt.

If you was to remove the silica bag do you have to change the coolant more often or use a different coolant?

My understanding is the role of the silica bag is to help prolong the silicate life within the G13 coolant, meaning fewer changes. I removed mine for peace of mind and now every 6 months or so I syphon the expansion tank out by c. 500ml and top up with neat G13.

Thanks for the reply, after some research online apparently the the g13 tanks with bags have been replaced by g12 Evo coolant without bags??

I’ve heard that as well - mines a MY2019 which had a ‘Mit Silikat’ bottle, so I guess it’s from MY20 onwards?

I have a bag in mine which I’m worried about splitting , I’m thinking about changing the tank and filling it back up with this g12 evo stuff? Apparently it can be mixed with g13 , Is that a wise move? Has anyone else using g12 evo?? This holts stuff says it does it all so I’m confused?

I just buy G13 from local Indy specialist. You can crimp the hoses to the bottle, drain and remove and then remove the bag, refit bottle and fill up but for the price of a new bottle, I couldn’t be bothered.

Well Iv managed to get mine out , I took the tank off and fished it out with some long nose pliers, the bags intact so that’s one less worry

Can the silica bag be pulled out of the expansion bottle easily?

It depends, there’s two types of coolant tanks, one is where the bag is just sitting in there like a tea bag and the other has the bag set in between the plastic wall of the housing, you would need to replace the tank for that one , I took my tank off to get mine,  just in case I ripped the bag getting it out ,  I followed this guys YouTube video

Useful link thanks. Been meaning to do this for a while and this has prompted me to sort it while the weather is cold (in the garage!!) :smug:

I found it slightly tricky due to where it was sat in the tank, but once I got it over it come out fine
