On my recent visit to the MOT station i had the chance to talk to the owner while my my car was being inspected.
I took the opportunity to enquire about aftermarket sports CAT downpipes and their ability to pass an MOT. To my surprise, the chap then said that they will pass the first MOT no problem, maybe the second if you're lucky but then they will fail! This, i wasn't expecting at all. So my question is to any MOT testers out there or any stage two or three owners, is this the case?
I look forward to your replies...

I agree...
Not on a Golf but my BMW failed it's MOT due to a sports cat not functioning correctly.
I had bought the car without realising it had been fitted, so was annoyed that I would have to search out and buy a standard one to replace it. (Cost me £400)
So IMO more hassle than they are worth unless you are going for mega power and cost/labour to keep replacing them are not important.

Are these CAT's budget ones or well known? My Cobra Sport one has passed 2 MOT's but I doubt a cheap as chips Chinesium CAT would pass twice.

I always wonder how different the aftermarket scene would be in the UK if we had had TÜV instead of our MoT system which can vary from tester to tester.

The one I had issues with was a VSRF

I have a Milltek 200cel sports cat on my stg2 R & its had 3 MOT's now & no issues
A decat will fail but a sports cat is what it says on the tin
