Title: I tempted fate!
Post by: dean5125 on 17 December 2024, 08:24
Hi guys....

So I may have shot myself in the foot lately after bragging to friends (none GTI/R owners!) that I've never kept a car for so long because I still love it and after almost 6 years it has never put a foot wrong short of servicing and tyres.... however and forgive me if this has been asked but I couldn't find anything on it but I've started to get a clunk as I come off the brake pedal every single time!! The brakes work and feel absolutely fine and it's only as you lift your foot off the peddle, it's really annoying and slightly concerning.... you know brakes and all!

Any ideas anyone besides my Dad's idea of it'll be fine just turn the stereo up? (FYI he's an ex mechanic at that!)

Have you been around the car and visibly checked the brakes for anything loose or worn. Check the tyres for abnormal wear. If you can jack each corner up so the wheel is off the ground and grab it as the 3 and 9 o'clock position and see if there is movement when you pull and push, the same at 12 and 6. If you can tell where the clunk is coming from obviously start with that corner.

I would also check that the brake pads are firmly in place with no free movement and the clips on the front inner pad have not come loose.

Morning guys,

Thanks for the feedback but I've isolated where the clunk is coming from and it actually sounds towards the top of the peddle box, right up inside the dash!! I've seen other threads with people having the same issue that have been to the main stealers and they apparently just really gave the brake peddle some hammer and it did solve the problem for a short time and mine was the same it just doesn't really inspire confidence when the one thing that stops you makes such a horrible annoying noise!!

I also have this, had it for ages. It's mainly at very slow stops, or when controlling the speed crawling to a stop. It is also on my T-Cross to a lesser extent. I've read a master cylinder/servo change can fix it and also read that it is not a fault and just a "feature" so no idea really!
