Title: New member looking at a mk8
Post by: Lancslad1985 on 04 December 2024, 21:21
Hi everyone,

Just joined the board, I’ve had several golfs in the past and lots of VWs but never a golf gti. The opportunity to get a 24 plate mk8 with low mileage has come up, I just wondered if there are any issues with the mk8 now? I know when it was first released there were quite a few, but were these rectified over time? Any other issues I should be aware of?

Appreciate any advice.

Hi, i had an early Mk8, and had lots of issues which were later found out to be related to the steering wheel.  Eventually got that changed, and it was fine after that. After its 3 year warranty was up, which was mid 2024, part exchanged for a late mk8 on a 24 plate. Done 4000 miles so far with no issues.
You should be fine, especially if you have a warranty on the car, and if its one of the later ones.

Had a Mk8 for 2 years and had zero issues with it. Mine was a 22 plate so missed out of the issues the early cars had

Welcome Lancslad

I’m currently running a December 2023 Golf which has been (touch wood) completely trouble free so far at 9000 miles. It’s my second mk8, preceded by a December 2020 Golf which was fairly trouble free until its second service when it had a software update which triggered all sorts of warning messages going off non stop. This was cured by a new steering wheel as a warranty claim and was fine for the rest of its time with me.
The later cars don’t seem to suffer that affliction.

Thanks Exonian, appreciate the input. Had a few polo gtis and a golf gtd in the past but finally at a point I can consider (afford) a golf gti so came here as it seems a friendly forum.

Welcome to the forum
Are you looking at a specific car yet? There are plenty of low mileage Mk8 GTIs on Autotrader but dealers are typically asking around £33.5K for very low mileage examples with upgraded wheels. For about the same money you could get a standard low mileage (typically ex-demo) 8.5. There are only a few 8.5's currently listed but if you are not too bothered about colour choice or upgraded 19 inch wheels, I would suggest looking at an 8.5. From the outside, the 8 and the 8.5 look nearly identical but the 8.5 has some significant upgrades under the bonnet and especially in the cockpit. Good hunting!

Thanks DTD. There’s a 24 plate pure white mk8 at £29k at my local dealer. I’d love an 8.5, my wife’s got an 8.5 match that I’m jealous of as I’d moved away from VW but I miss my golfs, but the 8.5 is significantly more at the moment. £29k seems a bargain for a car less than a year old with such low mileage but I’ll keep my eye out for ex demos, thanks for the advice!

Same story here, I had A Mk8 R one of the first, during covid and had nothing but issues, it went back... I have a Clubby now late build and i have no issues, apart from when its really cold you do get the odd alert saying it cant do this and that

Well, you’ve had the warm up act cars so now time for the real thing!
£29k sounds excellent value for what you get and the nearest 8.5 prices look to be about £4 - 5k more having just had a quick sweep of the classifieds.
If it’s lightly optioned and under the VW Used system you’ll probably get two years breakdown (£240?) thrown in, plus possibly a service pack and no £600 tax bill to cough up right before Xmas! 😱😁

Hi Lancalad, welcome to the forum!
I bought an ex-demo 24 plate Mk8 GTI back in April and have had absolutely no issues whatsoever. I have to admit I was a tad wary after reading about some of the issues on here, but that turned out to be unfounded. I have owned various GTIs over the years (I'm 74 now!) and this is one of the best in my opinion.
The Mk 8.5 was only just coming to the UK then, and as it turns out there are very few noticeable differences between the two as previously posted; OK, there is a slight power hike, but I doubt you would really notice during everyday fun driving. (I previously had a Porsche Macan S with 350 BHP, but the GTI is nearly 1/2 tonne lighter so the performance is almost identical).
As for the Mk8.5 interior, I just don't like the new infotainment screen - the Mk 8 one is much better integrated. Again, a matter of opinion, but I'm glad I took the 8.
Good luck with your GTI, you'll love it!

Thanks for the warm welcome All and your feedback on the car. My wife has a new 8.5 match and it’s lovely, made me miss my mk7 gtd. I’m likely to go ahead with the purchase, just need to convince my wife first

I bought an approved used 21 plate GTI had a couple of warnings pop up occasionally now they did latest software updates under warranty been fine ever since(rushes off to touch wood!)

I hav le had mk6 gti mk7.5 gti performance  and now this this is by far the best all round gti I have had so far love it!!

To many people listening to the problems on some of them buy it mate you will not regret it they are a great all round car !!

Have you considered a new one through Drive the Deal? Discounts seem really strong at the moment when taking into account the PCP offer (which you can just pay off). Base model GTI gets over £6k discount. Might be worth a look. I’ve just ordered this week through DTD and the process was incredibly smooth.

Thanks for the feedback all. Going to have a look in the new year as low mileage mark 8s are coming down in price according to the dealer, so he reckons Jan or Feb is the best time for a deal. So hopefully have my own golf gti early next year!

Apart from the crazy covid times, used car prices are always falling and the mk 8 GTI is no different, especially since the launch of the 8.5. It is interesting to see how the price of a particular used car has been reduced over time by a main dealer - by using the AT Price Tracker app for example. For example, there is currently a blue MK 8 GTI on AT that has seen nine price reductions since it was first advertised on 27 October. It started at £33,854 and was last reduced on 6 December to £30,300 - a drop of £3554 in just 6 weeks. Of course, if there is a particular car that you have found that meets your exact requirements then you always run the risk of losing it by waiting, but if you are not too picky there are plenty of low mileage (less than 10k miles) mk 8 GTIs for sale.

A further question, did the mk8 gti not come with a reversing camera as standard? It seems like a standard feature on most specs of the 8.5 but some of the low mileage 8s don't show a reversing camera on their spec. It’s not a deal breaker but just seems odd.

No. It was a chargeable option.
