Title: Alloy refurbishment mk7 GTI
Post by: Henners on 29 September 2024, 12:36
Looking to get all my standard 18 Austin alloys refurbished as they have been curbed one too many times. What is my best way of going about this and is it and how much should it cost?

You need to find a good alloy wheel reburishment  business best to see some of their work first  and decide if you wanted painted  or diamond cut finish   As for price   Where you are based  haven’t a clue   Loads of pictures on here. From people who have got them done

@Henners; Bear in mind that with diamond cut alloys, they can usually only be refurbished a maximum of twice with a diamond cut finish because the refurbishment process involves cutting away a layer of alloy from the face of the wheel. More than twice and the structural integrity of the wheels can be compromised if they were to be diamond cut a third - or more - time(s). The options are then to either have them powder coated or replace them.

As @Toeman has said, find a reputable alloy wheel company; ideally one whose sole business is refurbishing alloy wheels with their premises fully equipped to do work to an OEM as-new finish. As for cost; some alloy refurbishers’ websites used to include a price list for the different sizes and finishes, but they don’t seem to do that now. From memory, around 4-5 years ago, for a good reputable company producing top quality work to refurbish a 18” diamond cut alloy would have typically cost in the region of £100 - £120 plus VAT. It will undoubtedly cost more now. Some companies also charge extra to remove and refit the tyres.

One company that gets positive mentions on various car forums is Lepsons (www.lepsons.com) who I believe are reputed to be one of the best wheel refurb companies in the UK. They are based in Gillingham in Kent and have been in business many (20+?) years. Lepsons now also have a second premises in Wolverhampton. They will also arrange a courier service if you you don’t live near either of their premises. You may have companies that are more local to you though so do an internet search, review any local companies websites and also ensure you check out any customer reviews to get an idea of the quality of their work.

I'm going to do mine myself and keep them as winter wheels.

Local place changes £110 per wheel for diamond cur refurb. CM wheels are £500 for Pret reps, so it seemed a no brainer...

Isn’t that £500 per wheel?

At CM Wheels it's £500 for a set of 4.

Just sussed that in the last minute, look great value compared to a refurb.

Thanks all for the helpful replies, I'm based in Hemel Hempstead if anyone knows any local reputable dealers?

I don't know how many times they've been done before, I got it when it was only two years old directly from VW so I assume not more than one refurbishment so far. Looks like a good reputable company will be my best bet, and if they need doing again in the future, perhaps just get new Austins or Prets instead.

Where did you get those powder coated?

@Toeman; are they the ‘after’ pictures of your powder coated alloys? If so, then it looks like they’ve been two tone powder coated to replicate the original diamond cut finish.

Not all alloy wheel refurbishers will do a two tone powder coat finish - I dare say it’s time consuming to produce as it would require precision masking up of the wheels prior to applying the second colour. IMHO two tone powder coating does give the best of both worlds though; OEM diamond cut look but with the superior durability of powder coating. There’s another forum member who got the diamond cut Austin alloys on their GTI refurbished in two tone powder coat a few years ago and they also looked very good.

Certainly worth considering if anyone’s OEM diamond cut alloys are looking past their best and they’re planning on keeping their car longer term.

I really want to keep my GTI looking totally 100% factory finish, but Diamond cut really don’t help (been re-cut x1) so come spring time I’m definitely looking at two tone powder coating on my Parker’s.

These are the two tone powder coated Austin alloys (forum member is @GolfTi) I referred to in my previous post (reply #11) in this discussion topic.

Forum member @GolfTi used a company called Rolling Rims in Essex, so probably still too far from Manchester for you @Adam T7. The website does state they offer a collection and delivery service, although I dare say that service is limited to collection and delivery within a specific distance from their premises. Link to Rolling Rims website below;

I had the same issue and was thinking of getting them refubed. I was quoted 500€ here in Dublin and was told that the wheels would look slightly different due to the material removal. Since I'm working in a workshop and have acess to all sorts of tools I decided to bit the bullet and try to repair it myself. (never done it before) After a few DIY videos and a lot of work, they came out better than I expected. I'm into detailing so I've done a few sanding jobs before so not completely inexperienced on that.
I've sanded them all from 180 up to 5000 and lacquered after that.
Firts time posting so I'll try to upload a few images of the process.

Fantastic job. Brilliant finish. Not got the nerve to try that. Have cured mild kerb rash successfully but that is a totally different level.
