Title: MK8/8.5 GTI Fuel Range
Post by: nubedriver on 16 September 2024, 21:11
I am new to GTI's and Golf's in general. I have the MK8.5 GTI. I full tanked it last week and it gave me a range of 330 miles. However, I did notice the range dropping pretty fast which was a bit of a concern.

Today I had 150 miles left in terms of range. I topped it up so it was back to a full tank as I am going somewhere this week. That gave me a range of 265 miles which shocked me!

Am I too assume that I probably have to drive more efficiently to bring that back up or do I just focus on the little fuel bar at the bottom instead of the range?

The range will recalculate as you are driving according to your mpg.

My car is a Mk8 Clubsport.   When I top it up I usually see a range of over 400 miles and average close to 40mpg.

Three possibilities:

- You have a right foot made of lead
- The Mk8.5 has a smaller tank than the 8
- There is something wrong with your car

I've never had less than 350 miles from a full tank and I've had my car for 40 months.

The range will recalculate as you are driving according to your mpg.

It does.

From a personal viewpoint, I always think that the ‘range’ metric is of limited value in most scenarios. The only time I’ve really used it was at a time when panic buying caused a fuel shortage back in 2021. I was getting low on fuel and didn’t know which filling stations were open / had fuel to sell so I used range and adjusted my driving style to eke out as many miles as I could from the limited amount of fuel I had to ensure I could get home!

If I ever want to get a view of my car’s fuel usage, I’ll use MPG - either the long term view or the ‘since refuelling’ view. I can see from the fuel gauge when I need to buy fuel rather than use the car’s (questionable?) range calculation.

As said above, what MPG are you getting?

Depending on where I drive a full tank will either show 280 miles or 400+ miles. Hit 46mpg on the motorway this week

@Guzzle has it right. It calibrates based on your most recent driving style.

As an example if I'm driving around locally it could say I have 150 miles left in range and this will decrease normally if I continue to drive locally, however if I then drive a 200 mile trip at a steady speed on the motorway the same tank will show that after I've completed my journey that there is 50 mile range left.

I mainly do local driving (short trips less then 5 miles) but alot of them due to my job. I get about 260 miles from a full tank. This was similar to my Mk 7.5. If i go on longer trips the range increases and can get 400 + miles from a full tank. I usually drive in Eco mode for local driving or individual if i want the eco range but a sportier sound.

Learn to come off the go pedal. It doesn't need to be constantly revving unless you are really pushing.

I usually get around 300 to a tank and more like 400 on a long journey.

Short local journeys are the worst for fuel economy.

As stated it will work out range accordingly due to your use ie lots of short trips in traffic very low range.

For ref I filled up my standard Gti mk8 last week and did a 200 mile round trip mostly motorway some town and dual carriageway. Was showing over 40mpg average and 360 miles range left.

I always run mine I esso supreme 99 ron and do find this gives me better mpg on same run as opposed to the low octane std petrol.
