Hi Guys and Girls,
I have ordered a Golf GTI 8.5 which is sat on status 38 at emden, this has been like this since i placed the order on the 25th August.. i know it hasnt even been 2 weeks yet so im happy to wait but was wondering if anyone knows roughly how long it takes to get to status 40 in the uk?
Thanks and have a great day
-
At least 3 weeks I'd suggest as fastest. Might be longer at the moment.

Thank you, is there a big backlog at the moment then?
-
I’d be inclined to think that there is not currently a backlog, I say this as I ordered on August 10th, and it is already at status 20, with a confirmed build week of wk39 (week commencing 23rd September), I do realise this could easily be pushed back, but that was VERY quick, and surprised myself and the dealer!,
Status 38 is ‘released to shipping’ so given the lack of updates, i wouldn’t be surprised if your dealer suddenly calls up and says it’s arrived, the status codes don’t always update as expected and can jump some steps without updating, once on the ship it will take around one week to get to a uk dealer apparently, I’m not sure which port German made VWs enter the UK at, but the closer the dealer is to it the quicker the car will likely arrive.
Status codes-
00 = Assigned to factory order no production week scheduled
10 = Factory ordered with production week scheduled
20 = Factory ordered production week confirmed
30 = In transit from factory
36 = Vehicle in port of exit - not released
38 = Vehicle in port of exit - released to shipping
39 = Vehicle on ship
40 = Vehicle arrival at UK port
60 = Dispatched to dealership
70 = Vehicle arrived at dealership

Thank you so much for the update and yes your order has gone quick thats brilliant, i bet youre excited?
I have no way of tracking anything as i ordered at my local dealer so i literally only have an order number and thats it, if i want an update i have to ring the dealer :(

Yes it has progressed quickly so far, fingers crossed that my next update from the dealer at the start of October confirms it has been built on schedule, I’d be very disappointed if it ends up being delayed, and particularly if the delay becomes prolonged! I too have to rely on the dealer for updates, although it is possible to get updates from VW live chat during office hours by providing an order number.

How quick yours has progressed id imagine you will be ahead of schedule hopefully they don’t slow down and keep up the current pace! I asked live chat yesterday for an update with an order number and they referred me to my dealer, maybe I’ll ask again tomorrow as I’m not sure if they can tell me anymore than it’s at ended

I’d imagine that with live chat, it is likely to be highly dependant upon who you are chatting with as to wether they get the info for you, or wether they send you elsewhere.

Still sat at status 38 in Emden, been like this since Aug 26th
-
I’ve just chased the dealer as not heard a peep since I ordered on 8th Sept. Been told it’s still status 10,
So not moved since I ordered it. From what I see on the order statuses, this means it’s not even got a confirmed build date. Not impressed.
-
Much unrest in the German factories and no doubt plenty going on unpublicised behind the scenes

Mine was delayed by a month from when I ordered on the same date as you. Dealer reckons it will be built on the last week of November now. Delivery by end of January.

They’ll be in more bother if they can’t fulfill the ordered they’ve already got. I’ve been in VWs for a long time now and the shonky quality on the MK8 had me unsure about jumping into the MK8.5. This has got me thinking again. Just not sure what else is worth considering.

I agree that there is not much else available. Did consider a BMW M440i, but wasn't sure. Lack of choice now and I certainly have no desire for an electric car.
-
This makes it even more odd that my car arrived just 10 weeks after ordering on the 10th August!? They told me it would be a minimum of 20weeks, so I was expecting it in late December or early January, or maybe later still, the dealership was quite frankly amazed how quickly it got built and shipped, and were still mentioning that when I collected it, the sales guy did also mention that VW appear to be pushing some 8.5 orders back to the second quarter next year! But they’ve also had several GTI’s delivered in double quick time, so who knows, it appears to be a bit of a roulette based on chosen dealer and their allocations, spec chosen, and date of order. 🤷♂️ I can honestly say though, that the 8.5 GTI is (in my opinion) head and shoulders above the 8 in most ways, and is worth the wait. Once mine moved beyond Status 10 it progressed really quickly, so fingers crossed @Colh. 🤞

Ordered mine Aug 20th, picked up today. So 2 month wait.

You’d think they’d be running extra shifts and pulling out all the stops to get cars ordered and built to stave off the worst of the financial issues. I guess it doesn’t help they get penalised for not selling enough % of EV’s despite the lack of demand. They’re in a bit of a lose lose position in some respects.

Excellent! Looking forward to seeing the car.
What are your initial impressions? (I’m asking for Joe! 😁)

In the 1 mile trip home (lol) there is something definitely more premium about it that I can’t put my finger on why. It’s not a major leap forward, just a nice step. Maybe it’s the bigger/better infotainment and the slight tweaks around the car.
I was concerned it was going to feel exactly the same as the 8, so wasn’t that excited about picking it up but there are quite a few tiny differences that make it a noticeable step up.
Was also concerned how big the screen was and if it would look silly and get in the way, but it’s actually totally fine and fits in nicely.
Very happy with the new wheel choice, the Warmenau, in person they look so much better, very premium looking I feel.
Only negative on the new looks in the front bumper, now the radar/safety sensors are down the bumper it spoils the clean look for me.

Got a call back from the dealer. They’re saying it’s got a build week in December now, so not likely to get it until Feb. At which point, may as well wait until the new plates in March.
All for a stock GTI with only black paint as an option

Could be worse I guess, it should arrive at the dealer around four weeks after build.

Luck of the draw it seems, my order was 3 weeks before you and is here, but looks like yours will take a couple of months more to arrive

None of the delivery times make sense. I know spec changes things, but that doesn't seem to apply here where people have cars with good spec before others with standard spec. There is all this negative press about VW at present and closing factories, but surely that will only make things worse. They can build cars in a day all with automated robots, but they cannot sort out proper lead times for people ordering. If VW could say you will have your car in 2 months from order, I would imagine there would be a load more orders.
I mean, I have no knowledge of how car manufacturing works, but surely they can make the order and delivery process much more reliable.
-
I mean, I have no knowledge of how car manufacturing works, but surely they can make the order and delivery process much more reliable.
Car manufacturing works like most production line manufacturing... they plan production of a batch (or item in the case of a car) based on the availability of the parts needed. That might be on hand parts (ie sitting on a shelf at the factory) or it might be when expected deliveries will arrive ("just in time" manufacturing whereby planned need for a part is ordered for delivery by a supplier - and in cars nearly every part is made by a third party not the car maker who simply assembles sub components!)
So manufacturing slots are available and into these slots the production planner has to place customer orders based SOLELY on the ability for all of the parts to be available on that particular day/week.
And that is why your order will bounce around for some time until its production status is "planned" - which is normally for VW locked in 2 weeks before the actual production takes place.
Hopefully you can see that for your order there are hundreds of seperate items probably coming from hundreds of different suppliers that all have to arrive at a precise time for your order to be fulfilled.... and this happens for 2.3 MILLION customer orders in 2023....
Just because your order needs the same part as 200 other golfs needing to be built, your order might not be assigned the parts that 199 others have, so you get knocked back a build week...
Is this complex? Yes absolutely.
Is this effecient? Well yes it is to a large degree, its certainly more financially effecient than say having a vast warehouse full of parts and doing stock orders when minimum inventory levels are reached.
Where it can of course come unstuck is when suppliers to VW have a hiccup (a Russian missile through their roof or a cargo ship stuck sideways in the Suez Canal) and amplified by hundreds of times due to the diverse sourcing of car components.
Does that help answer your question?
-
@fredgroves; good post and a nice summary . I would add that the number of build slots allocated by VW to a dealer could also have a bearing on when a car is built.
I don’t know if VW’s process for allocating build slots is still the same as it was a few years back, but historically, VW made a quarterly(?) build slot allocation to dealers for specific models. I may be wrong but I seem to remember that certain factors such as size of a dealer / dealership group and number of vehicle orders they place have a bearing on the number of build slots VW allocate to them. If a dealer accepts more customer orders than they have allocated build slots for in any given calendar quarter, then those excess orders can’t be submitted to the factory in that quarter - instead, the dealer needs to carry them over to the next quarter (or subsequent quarters) when they get their next build slot allocation from VW.

I understand there’s lots of moving parts to getting a car built. But this was a car already slated for build by VW, and the dealer was picking one from a bunch that should in theory have then been prioritised for build as there was a customer waiting on it.
Now if VW say it’s all a bit too complex for me to understand, and my order could be anything from 1-6 months then I’d tell them to stick it before placing an order. But 12 weeks was a worst case when ordering. I was assured it would be quicker as it normally is. So I took my chance and ordered expecting to get it November at some point and definitely this side of Xmas.
Currently mulling it over, but erring on the side of cancelling and sticking with the MK8 for a bit longer or trying to get a stock car from a dealer that already has one if there is such a thing.

Very good explanation from fredgroves and SRGTD. Described far more eloquently than I could have done. 👌

I’m not sure where abouts you are, but there are some stock cars available, here’s one the same as you ordered.

So there obviously is a further mechanism which is to do with order priority on top of what I said... Brand new model, dealers getting batches of stock and others ordering custom builds for customers etc etc Some dealers will have priority, some countries will have priority etc etc
Basically until your order gets to "build week confirmed" (which will be 2 weeks ahead of the week when its actually built) nobody will tell you anything about when you might get your car.
Ask the dealer what the factory status is for the order, if its not "build week confirmed" then they really have been telling you porkies about when it is expected because literally nobody knows (well nobody in the UK anyway)
Oh and expect about 2-4 weeks from the end of the build week and when it maybe arrives in the UK.

Maybe a little early to ask about driving dynamics then!
Are yours the black or polished Warmenau?
They look a bit fiddly to clean but the style of them is .
Do they still have that channel behind the spokes like nearly all other mk7 and mk8 era alloys?
The radar placement isn’t as neat at the mk8 admittedly but I’m sure after a while you don’t really look at it. A bit like the vents on one side and not the other. You kind of get used to seeing it and it ceases to register.

Frustrating. Been there myself more than once.
If the discount was really good then it’s worth sitting it out. Failing that there are a number of in stock cars around the country and a handful on VW’s stock search that are due at dealers very soon.
The initial rush of cars at launch seems to be sliding back towards VW’s Continental drift like wait times.

Yes! still only done a couple of miles, hardly seen it in daylight yet!
I've got the black Warmenau, not sure about the channel, will have a look when I clean then as yes you're right they are going to be a nightmare to keep clean.
I think the 8.5 is a little quieter from the exhaust, or maybe it just needs more miles on it to open it up. My Clubsport 8 used to pop like a gun... maybe too much as could be embarrassing in multi story car parks
-
I don’t think I ever noticed my Clubsport do exhaust pops except when starting it up when already warm.
I can’t say I’ve ever noticed my R pop either. It must be me, I must drive like an old lady, spent too much time being stuck behind them I now drive like one.

I can get mine to pop/bang fairly regularly! In Sport mode, 3rd gear at around 3.5k revs, ease off the throttle and it’ll “pop” on the over run.

Same, I noticed you have to put it back in race eveytime you start though, even if it starts in race, it’s a weird quirk for some reason. I’ll see what happens with the new club sport after it’s run in a bit more but the oops are currently quieter = happy wife.
-
That’ll be me then, I almost never use Sport mode. I drive like an old lady!

Same here with my GTI, pops quite loudly when coming off the throtle
