Title: Paint flaking
Post by: CookieMonsterGTi on 17 August 2024, 07:22
Noticed yesterday the section under the bonnet where the wipers are that the finish has started to flake off. Not sure when this started as it’s really out of eye line.

Anyone else had the same? This is on a TCR if it makes any difference… ceramic coated and safely washed.

On the wiper arms or on the edge of the bonnet? One of my wiper arms is flaking, keep meaning to either paint it or replace it.

On the underside of the bonnet above the drivers wiper arm pivot - seen this on a Mk7 before.

Exactly this.

Sounds like it may be common. Do you know if anyone got support from dealers to fix at all?

My passenger wiper started to discolour where the arm connects to the wiper-blade when it was only around 18 months old, I pointed this out to my dealer but it was dismissed saying I must be using the 'wrong' screen wash! I've only used VW or Quantum.  I touched up the etching marks which looked ok but in the end I replaced the passenger one when the hinge started to go white.

Now got the same on the drivers side

The wipers and scuttle area gets a lot of abuse with liquids and full on baking sun, probably why so many go grey after a while unless you protect them.

This area is shaded from sun I would think and don’t think it would be affected or touched by any screen wash even if that was an issue.

In for MOT next month so will enquire then.

When I first read these posts I thought the reference to flaking was along the bonnet trailing edge, but the actual area is in such a weird place? Assume there’s no trim touching the area etc? Makes you wonder if there was a defect in the process of painting the bonnet?
I checked mine this AM, looks ok but the quality of the finish isn’t brilliant. Good luck with getting it sorted and let us know how you get on with it.

Maybe, or perhaps the bonnet has been repainted or replaced and that section wasn’t prepped correctly prior to (re)painting.

At least the mk7.5 is painted under the bonnet. Current generation cars are left in the primered state; picture below is of a current generation Polo GTI engine compartment. Car is Kings Red but engine compartment and underside of bonnet is grey primer .

Penny pinching by VW .

Just an update for anyone interested.

As expected VW not interested in covering it. However dealership agreed it wasn’t a good look so agreed to sort it and cover the cost.

End result all done now!
