Well after 8 years of ownership of my Golf MK7 PP I’m driving it to dealer tomorrow to sell. Just been clearing it out and feeling a bit disconsolate. It’s been a great car but recently retired so thought I’d get something smaller and cheaper to run, though apart from tyres and service I’ve spent no money.
This forum was a great help in the early days , I can see most of names I used to recognised are not posting any more and I’m sure the Polo forum won’t be as much fun.
I’m taking it to a dealer , really hope they don’t put it to auction as it’s in great condition, 40,000 miles, FSH, wheels not refurbished or anything and no paint. I probably should have tried private but was not confident , over 20 years since I did that. Anyway hope she’s looked after in the future as well as I’ve looked after her.
Bye and thanks again!

Enjoy your retirement @Pixwix. I can thoroughly recommend it! (I had the opportunity for early retirement back in 2015 and took it).
Which model of Polo are you getting / have you got? I’m on the Polo forum, and have been for nearly nine years (current car is a 2020 Polo GTI+, owned from new). It was very busy on the Polo forum when I was waiting for my current car - lots of other forum members were also waiting for their cars at that time too - but the Polo forum does seem quite quiet these days with many of the posters seeming to be one-time posters; ask a question, get their answer and they’re off! There are a few helpful and knowledgeable die-hard members though. Maybe owners are more into social media groups these days? I post fairly regularly if and when I’m able to help others.
Hope to see you on the Polo Forum.

Farewell Pixwix and very best wishes.
Some of us are still around, but many have moved on.
If given the chance I’d take early retirement myself too. I’d bin the Golf, get something simple to live with and maintain like an up! GTI and run the thing until either it or I dropped.
Enjoy your days being your own!
-
No need to disappear Pixwix, after 8 years of ownership experience you have plenty to offer newer members! Enjoy your retirement, I'm not far behind you, seven weeks to go (not that I'm counting).
Given what you've said though, I'd have thought your GTI was perfect? Keeping mine or possibly treating myself to something really silly!
Oh, and cogratulations

Enjoy retirement lads tho it’s not all it’s cracked up to be If you have worked 40 plus years it’s very difficult not to just sit about bit of part time work is the way to go with a trip every 8 week or so.

Nah, there’s a big world out there and you don’t have to be spending money all the time to enjoy it.
After decades of dancing to other people’s tunes you can dance to your own. Sitting round is optional, you can make the most of every day in all sorts of other ways should you choose, there’s a wealth of things to do no matter where you live that can cost as little or as much as you like, absolutely no need for boredom. But at least you get to choose, health permitting.
Blimey, I can remember when you could sit on this forum all day and you’d not get bored! Fun times, much quieter now.
Back to Watts post earlier - I was thinking the same thing, your GTI sounds a good bet to hang onto Pixwix and still enjoy your motoring (and being part of this forum!)
It’s not too late to change your mind. At almost any price there are few better cars out there than a mk7 Golf and you could do worse than hang on to a good one.

Ah, nice to see a few familiar names. And I had spotted you on the polo forum srgtd - I’m getting a Polo r line, very sensible . ‘Regrets I had a few’ - yeah, this might be one of them, cracking car. Also wishing I’d spec’d upgraded audio, going to miss my dynaudio I think. Should have also be done the NC 500 with the Gti as well I guess. Just thought I’d get out before any big bills started coming. I’ve been WFH for last 4 years so haven’t been driving as much.
-
Been retired for a good few years (got an extra 25p on my pension last year!) and still enjoy my gti. Hope you enjoy your polo. They look really good in their latest incarnation. Happy retirement. Make the most of it.

Happy retirement, best of wishes

Thought a GTI would be a perfect retirement car, given its the perfect balance of being able to the day to day effortlessly and with decent economy, but with enough performance for something little more spirited when moment suits.
Worked from home for over a decade now and have quite a bit of flexibility and actually enjoy my job and people work with, so the retirement path is something not really been thinking to, but as just hit a landmark birthday beginning with 6! its creeping into view, likely do another couple of years and then do the phased exit over a year, which is basically part time with 80% money, or maybe convince them to pay me a year or so salary and leave there and then.
In terms of cars, did toy with a last hurrah of new, and had an idea of financing a MK 8.5 R/Clubsport, but have decided to channel more into pension as late boost and think will add a MK 7.5 R/GTI to our present 2019 R, as my retirement drive until they both get into the 10 year and then maybe swap one for 4-5 year old MK 8.5 GTI/R and run other as second car run around for as along as economical too.
Think my retirement would be to have a complete year off, have plenty in mind to keep myself occupied, keeping self active, lots of walking! (with added pleasure of long drives in cars we love to drive, getting to the walks) and including grassroots coaching, where can help more on administrative side of club as whole.
Maybe then might do something part time, hopefully in one of areas where feel can give something back? Who knows, but never struggled keeping myself busy, and with some purpose, so cannot see a reason for that to change,
Good topic, good sailing for all those who have retired or about to, and keep your purpose and fiercely defend allowing yourselves the things you enjoy IE: Cars and driving :)

Totally agree with the you do not have to spend much money, one of benefits as get older is you realise much of the material just passes through and what you value most is not that expensive, since Covid for example, we really discovered the joy of long walks in some beautiful places, and for me, love coaching grassroots, neither cost very much at all, but take up a lot of my free time, and if had extra time, sure they would fill that also, and we have stripped back quite a bit in recent years, live a lot more simply and would say to the improvement of our overall well being, you can do it, and really do not want for anything.
We had good discussion on cars, we both like our cars and driving, usually out to some nice locations locally and around UK when we have breaks, not a single part of country we not been to in last few years. The agreement on cars is we still buy something interesting, but strictly used and for cash, and we just keep them well maintained, the fortunate part of that policy now is that most cars are pretty well specced so there is nothing that comes new, that will really miss, whereas previously you would suffer on some of the modern tech if bought used.
So after a run of a new car every 3 years for last 15 years, cannot see us buying new ever again, even if some additional monies come our way that mean we could, think its just a sound policy given quality of cars available used now.
Its quite a coincidence seeing this thread, as it was only this weekend gone that we started to discuss my personal roadmap into exiting the workplace, so this just added to them thoughts and is convincing me have got it about right in what intend to do.

Best of luck. I hope retirement opens up a whole new world for you.
I am also 8 years into ownership of My MK7 PP. 66k and like was mentioned earlier after 23 years with the brand its last man standing, it or me. My plan was to retire last year (60) but just couldn't do it. I Enjoy my work, 6.5mile rural trip to the office, no stress until the Americans wake up, ( They still work in inches you know) and a good set of lads to work with. My wife has already jumped, she loves it,but I'm not ready to play Golf with 28 handicappers. 2 more years then I'll bail, tell my boss I'll consult if needed for some extra cash.
Again, Best of luck. Happy Retirement.

I have to do top and bottom of the day, APAC, and then the US, with the Europeans and UK sandwiched in-between :) But become pretty good at only arranging and attending meaningful meetings, and like you, though there is attention to detail and the making of good decisions, work with good folk all over, some quite bow to talented and never felt the retirement itch, but as you said, recent 60 does trigger that thinking and maybe 2 years more for me, then maybe a phased third?? who knows, though my wife 4 years younger than me, so she will be keeping work lights on, and me with roof over head (unless annoy her too much, by getting under he feet in work day)
We should be ok financially for a standard, simple living and that does mean that lavish indulgences on cars will be thing of past, will prioritise plenty of trips and interests/activities, so can see taking cars to ten, and chopping them in for 5 yr old as being the way, worked out that by time our MK 7.5 are at ten, we should be in affordability band for a decent performance MK 8.5

Hertsman, good for you that you enjoy your work! I'm going at 57 as my work has been a constant pain and a stressor for many years and I reached the point where a reduced pension was well worth it to escape the nonsense and corporate bullying. I've no idea how I'm going to fill my time at the moment but like you I enjoy getting out for a good walk so that will be a start. Generally getting fitter and not doing shifts, no more alarms!
Maybe we need a retirees thread!
-
I retired at 58 and realised after about a year it was way to early, so back at work for a mate who has his own business just a couple of miles away, so GTI gets used most days when I don’t walk to work.
No thoughts of selling it at all, just a great car that still makes me smile after 5 years of ownership.
-
I’ll be taking mine into retirement- and I’m a good 10 years away.
Truly great car.
I should add that, contrary to what I’ve read on this forum, it is a beautifully built car- not a single rattle or creak after 5 years and 33k miles.
-
I got my first performance Golf WHEN I retired and now on my 4th GTI.
This one is going nowhere…why would it?
I get immense satisfaction being “the old guy with the hot hatch” but in fact this car is such a great all- rounder I can never find anything to replace it with (keep secretly googling 135is though but don’t tell anyone)
On the subject of retiral, I am on my third “false start” still doing some consulting but none of the crap that goes with a full- time post.
Maybe we should indeed start a retirees section as I can just imagine what a turn- off this string is to anyone under 50 😂😂😂😂
Maybe #bunchofoldbuffers!
-
I currently intend to keep my Ed40 as the sensible car in retirement, it doesn't get much use as I seem to be driving the sports cars more of late and using the free bus/train/tube pass.
A friend really wants my Golf in a deal against his 250 mile GR86, as tempting as it is I think I will hang on to the Golf?

Its funny how things just happen, my work history is split in two, the first part as an engineer, pumping equipment on Ready Mix sites for additives, then forklifts, then vending machines, then worked for Hoover, and then moved to BT for the up the poles and down the holes, which seemed a good to job to settle in for long stint, but the site that was based was run by a pair of dinosaur bullies, entrenched in the old ways of management, and they made my life a misery, so one day, just said to wife, you going to have to back me, i am leaving today, which did.
Next action that day was to go to an agency for some temp work, and there was a short term contract on an IT desk, at basic level, something never done before, but thought what the heck, its only temporary and can look for something more permanent while get paid to train, however, really took to it, the folk there were great, polar opposite to last experience, and found my problem solving skills actually transferred quite readily to the environment, and 22 years later still there in a way advanced position to when joined and still enjoying working with some talented folk.
Suppose motto of that story, is that understand the feeling of being completely unhappy in what doing and how being treated and you just have to back yourself and be brave and make the change, you can always make other changes down the line, like some here, they have returned on a more casual part time basis to keep hand in, can see myself doing similar, though my return would be away from IT and more in area where can give something back hopefully.
Remember everyone 60 is the new 50, :) certainly not felt the drop off that maybe my grandparents did, sure it will come! but hanging in there :)
Cannot see my car taste changing, ever, anything drive will have to have some performance and do the day to day well, and despite the groans to what VW do sometimes, nobody really does the combination better, so as long as VW are making them, sure will have a version in the stable.

I was required to take Early retirement on ill health grounds in 2011. I was devastated. My lovely wife encouraged me to buy a car that I really fancied as a treat, soon after retirement started. I agonised. Eventually opting for a Golf GTI that I’d always liked, but had never quite been in comfortable, let alone easy reach.
A New Mk6 GTI was ordered in Jan 12 and delivered in May with some carefully chosen options. Black. 18” Monza Shadow wheels. Dynaudio and Cruise +,+. It was a gem of a car. A real head turner. Got many an approving nod.
I part Ex’d it to upgrade to a new R in 2019. I wish I’d kept my GTI as our second car. They become like a second skin. I understand It’s still a beaut. 65k miles and Not a single Advisory to be seen aged 12, Hahah.

Scratched an itch couple years ago, and bought MK 6 GTI with 60k miles as second car for wife, and was super impressed with it, great build quality and really pulled strong, the only reason we moved it on was the media unit and overall lack of tech just became too much of a miss, and we too replaced that with a 2019 Golf R with all tech would ever need. MK 6 GTI was a brief experience, but can definitely see why some run them well into the 100k

When my 128Ti goes back next year, a ED40 is an outside replacement as my personal run around, does not have to be perfect or low mileage, so not looking for a keeper, as intend to keep my next car for 2-3 years and so will be driven without any thought to its future value, just needs to do its duties and provide some enjoyment also,
A 2017 > Golf R or GTI PP are in frame also, but if see a decent enough ED40 at my price point of sub £20k can see me being tempted to just enjoy one for a few years.

I think I was being sensible as my pension isn’t great and didn’t want to have to fork out any big bills, hadn’t spent anything in 8 years so thought my luck might run out . Had no paint on her or anything as well and thought perhaps best get rid before that happened as I’d be mortified. Just seen what vertu Leeds have put her up for sale price and wish I’d stuck out for a bit more!! Picked polo up today and think my OH is sick of me saying .. ‘and it’s not got…. ‘
just keep saying to OH.. ‘ it’s not got ‘..
-
The deed is done then Pixwix.
I’m sure you’ll settle in to the new car soon enough. There are things the Polo won’t have but whether those features that it lacks you use much is another thing. Less to go wrong in any case!
How about a photo or ten of the Polo?
I for one get your line of thinking, get a simpler car to run on a lesser income and have less to worry about.
I’d be the same, possibly sooner rather than later!
-
Just about to do first wash Exonian…. Didn’t let garage do that. Just searching back for Booth11’s ‘new car wash schedule’ 😀.
Also my retirement plan is to travel more abroad, so strictly speaking car even less important.. (who am I kidding )

Going to be somewhere between £3k and £5k would be my guess.

Spot on Fredgroves!.. well about middle of those 2.
But they won’t need to spend much prepping.. might refurb front 2 wheels, I’ve never done them and at first they didn’t even spot curbing in one of them.. I rubbed back with very fine paper and lacquered mysrlf
-
Thats a typical markup on second hand cars from a reputable trader.
Thats not all profit either... a lot of costs rolled into that including money to cover the thing being a lemon and them needing to fix it. That add on money will also be averaged out across all of the sales.... some you win, some you lose and on average you are up...
-
It looks like a good buy with that mileage and obviously very well looked after. Buying a car like that from a VW dealer and you’ve got no worries for 2 years with the full warranty. Also if you get it on PCP you can get 2 services for free - well around £20 -£30 which is the cost of a couple of days interest before you pay it off!!
I’ve just bought a 68 plate GTI from VW and the prep was excellent, full service including Haldex, a brand new PZero to match the others as it has a nail in it, all four wheels refurbished to a superb standard and the water pump was also replaced.
Mine is a sort of pre retirement present to myself! Reckon I’ve got at most a couple of years before I hand in my notice so I’ll see what I do then, probably won’t be able to afford to have two cars then.
The Polo GTI looks to be a very good choice, you get so much more for your money age and mileage wise when compared to a second hand Golf. Just been and sat in a brand new Golf GTI in the local dealer, I’d always been out off them as I hate the very modern interior but I actually quite liked it. Looking round it though it seems to me to be not much different to the MK7 except for the dashboard. A bit like how the MK6 was more of an updated Mk5. To me the Mk7 was a massive leap forward but the Mk8 not so much. Anyway at £43k I think I’ll be sticking with what I’ve got for a while!
-
Weirdly they seem to have dropped the price by £1000.. I don’t know whether to be sad, I thought it was worth £17,000, I means what do they think is wrong with it … or happy , price I got seems reasonable now.. never happy!😃
-
Dealerships will monitor prices, especially bigger chains. Sometimes these figures aren’t set by someone actually at the dealership. Don’t take it as a slur on the car Pixwix, I doubt they gave it much more than a cursory glance.
It’s not uncommon for a new in stock car to initially go on the forecourt at a higher price to see if it gets any early interest, only to be brought in line with general pricing shortly afterwards. Sales have been quiet of late so the market will demand price drops. High interest rates don’t help and general elections cause people to slow their personal spending I’ve been reliably informed in the past.
