Popped in to my local main dealer for a couple of bottles of screenwash this morning (in my Mk 7.5 GTI PP DSG). Forecourt is full of Tiguans (and a few Polos). Hardly any Golfs. One Mk 7.5 GTI on standard 18's with SOLD in the window. Decent ones are already becoming like hens teeth. What a weird motoring place we have ended up in.

I got my GTI from a VW main dealer a year ago.
Everything was geared towards the change to battery powered SUVs, clearly driven by VW HQ.
On pick up day I think my GTD was the only diesel on the premises.
Once the deal had been done the salesman admitted privately they could sell GTIs all day long, but obviously thats not their target anymore.
-
How funny, cruised by Parkway VW Derby earlier today and the car park was also full of Tiguans.
-
Similar experience in Lincoln, 2 new standard mk8 gti at reduced price because of mk8.5 gti prices but no other gtis and mainly evs.
-
Just following up on something I posted this morning on the Mk8 forum, what do you think is happening to prices for “good” 7.5 GTIs?

Do not think there will be much change. They are still sought-after if relatively low mileage.

Had the same when I went into my local. There was only a T-Roc Cabriolet in a colour that would only look good on a dark night and a Tiguan on the forecourt. I was staring at the T-Roc in disbelief and a salesman interpreted this as interest. 'Pretty cool huh?' was his opening gambit. 'Pretty' and 'cool' are not the words I would ever use in the same sentence as this car was my reply. The regret for having left his desk was clear.
Really uninspiring place to be. It looked more like a porcelain tile showroom for the amount of it on display.

I think they are holding their value well, relatively speaking. According to Motorway, my 67 plate GTI (35k miles) has only lost £300 in value since early January and has gone up slightly over the last 2 months. Now at just over £15K and I know from previous experience with Motorway's initial valuations (the 'reserve', based purely on age and mileage) that you can expect to get a fair bit more than that, depending on the car's desirability and condition.
Incidentally, the Golf GTD TDI is currently running 4th in Motorway's "hottest cars" list, in terms of the price achieved over the initial valuation. BMW M4 Comp is top.
-
What would you expect though as a retail sale? £17k
What did they retail at pre-pandemic?

Do you mean what would a dealer try to sell mine for (2017, 35k miles)? Yes, I think £17-17.5k, judging by adverts on Autotrader. I would expect to get at least £15.5k selling it through Motorway. I wouldn't even think about selling it privately any more. Not worth the hassle.

I don't think there will be much change, especially to low mileage 7.5s. As mentioned above they are still sought after and I think it will be the case more and more when rare low mileage ones become available in the future.
I just bought a 7.5 GTI PP a couple of months ago with 15k miles, 1 owner, full VWSH. Price was pretty high for a 4 year old car but I think the premium price of buying for a main dealer is definitely worth it with the 2 year warranty, they even had an offer on for 2 years free servicing so was happy with the deal.
Was looking at Autotrader everyday, then on a Saturday morning this appeared and phoned the dealer straight away, literally an hour after it went on sale on Autotrader, they sent a customised video and I then paid the reserve fee the same morning. Had to travel 3 hours the next day to take a look at it. But when I did go and confirmed the sale after the test drive, the salesman said they had two other phone calls on the same day they advertised it and one person wanted to pay the reserve. The demand on a one owner low mileage 7.5 is high and I think it's due to the combination of the reputation it has from all the reviewers and owners as many see it as peak GTI and also the lack of buttons in the 8 which is a deal breaker for some.

Is this hottest list public on their website?

Not sure. It came as a graphic in a recent email notification from Motorway. I have pasted it below. However, looking at it again, it is a list of the 'ten best sales', rather than an average of numerous sales of a particular car. Gives an indication nonetheless.

Thanks, I wonder where my MK6 sits!

I've been monitoring the value of my 7.5 GTI closely on Motorway over the past month or so as I'm going to be looking to trade it in once my 8.5 arrives. I checked this morning and the price of it has risen by almost £200, this is the second time it has risen over the past couple of weeks which is interesting! It's very low mileage (16,000) and I'm the second owner. I think once the price increases happen towards the end of the year for the 8.5, the 7.5 used prices could rise further.

Yes, I started looking for a 7.5 Performance about 2 months ago and the good ones were flying out of the showrooms, especially from main dealers. I didn’t realise that performance cars are a bit like convertibles and the prices rise in the summer months, one dealer was telling me he could sell GTIs all day long, not so the yard full of ID3’s and ID5’s he had!!
Finally picked up my 7.5 GTi Performance last weekend and well happy with it.
-
If what you say is correct and they are still commanding strong money would be tempted to put my own up
-
I think we're all in the same boat of wanting to change but there's nothing substantially better available on the market, without going into the next level price / running costs such as M3's.
I strangely find myself looking at Touaregs, X5s and XC60s a lot lately.

No. No, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no, no.
Just no.

Hello, the last time I tried a MK7 was in 2013, trying one of the launch cars.
Will I notice much apart from the cosmetic things in a 2017 7.5 230PS car?
The important things look identical, seat, steering wheel etc

The techie bits and cosmetics you know about, the only other things of note were a bit of cost cutting here and there which was mostly bits of plastic omitted from spec such as under seat drawers, door mirror screw trims and bits of engine cover etc.
Other than that there were around 4 years of development by the time the 7.5 was launched which can only be a good thing.
-
Thanks, I assume a June 2017 model will have dual injection and no GPF?
But overall the actual driving experience between 2013 and 2017 will be virtually identical?
-
Yes, pre-GPF and drive wise it’ll be much the same as the early mk7’s, although if you drove a launch car with minimal miles you can expect a 7 year old car to have lost that new car tightness.

You say that until I say I caught my sump pan, mudflap and lower front bumper driving over crane tracks, thankfully no damage but did have to dig it out.

Point taken under the circumstances Will!
But still - no.
Maybe get cheap Jimny for work.

Hello again, I am looking at both cloth and leather interior cars, how is everyone's perforated leather holding up in the MK7.5?
Any signs of "baginess"?
I found this 7.0 example with 120,000 miles and the seats look OK https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202108176348793

Please do drop me a PM with details of your 7.5, assuming it's a 5-door DSG model.

So just coming back to this thread that I started a couple of months ago - this morning I returned to my local main dealer (to drop my wife's car off who is having her Mk 7 Golf serviced today) and again the forecourt out front was pretty bare with just Tiguans and a few Polos - I couldn't see any Golfs at all on the forecourt at first glance until I saw there on the front row at the end a 2012 (2012!!) Mk 6 Golf R (looking pretty tired to be fair). The only Golf they have up for sale is 12 years old (!)
-
That’s amazing. A couple of years ago my local dealer would not have been stocking any used Golf over 3 or maybe 4 years old. And there would be plenty on offer especially at the 3 year age!
-
You can occasionally spot a MK6 on vw.co.uk
That twelve year old R has 77,000 miles and can be yours for £13,000
It does some nice extras, ACC, 19" wheels and leather.
-
Has there been any past discussion about the pros/cons of
1. Pre-facelift performance model
2. Post-facelift standard model
The pre-facelift will be older, but with about equal miles the pricing can be very similar.
Any thoughts?

Hello, I am still looking at MK7s and have found another possible candidate, the MOT record is OK part from
Bonnet primary retaining device excessively deteriorated - failed
Is this a common fault on the MK7?

If by ‘bonnet primary retaining device’ it’s referring to the bonnet release cable mechanism, then these are known to fail, leaving the bonnet locked and the owner with the inconvenience and hassle of trying to get it open! There have been owners on the forum who’ve had this happen to them.
A cheap and very effective repair is to use zip ties around the cable junction box.

Thanks, I will ask the owner if I can get a viewing.
