Evening all,
So, I treated myself to a private plate for my 40th, wanted one for years and managed to bag a lovely 5 letter reg.
Had me thinking, Id like to get shorter number plates to give it the minimalisic look and seeing as short plates are fully road legal as long as you have 40mm between the first letter and final letter and the outa edge of the plate, then you are good.
I wondered if there was such a thing as a shorter number plate plinth for the MK6 Golf?
If not, I am thinking of buying another one on ebay to cutup and have abit of a project with.

How about looking for one from a US model, they look shorter. Alternatively, lose the plinth and go for a vinyl plate that’ll sit much better on the bumper.

The US ones are much bigger in height I ideally didnt want a larger plate.
In terms of a Vinyl one, never liked them and I think they are illegal now too

Not seen one, I just used a standard size plate on the front.

As I only have 5 letters, I wanted a shorter plate like this (Not my plate)

Just a heads up, you don’t need a 40mm border. The requirements are:
- characters must be 79mm tall
- characters (except the number 1 or letter 1) must be 50mm wide
- the character stroke (the thickness of the black print) must be 14mm
- the space between characters must be 11mm
- the space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 33mm
- the margins at the top, bottom and side of the plate must be 11mm
- vertical space between the age identifier and the random letters must be 19mm
There are a few other things it needs to have to, namely the details of the place that made the plate, and the BS AU mark.

If you’re wanting short plates, I got mine from justnumberplates.co.uk, so I can vouch they make them as small as possible while still being legal. If you’re in the northeast you can pop in and get them made, if not you can post the required documents to them to get them made.

Well, in the end, I removed the numberplate plinth and decided to run without it.
My god, it was paintful to see so many holes :(
For the big holes, I found these caps in my garage so rubbed them down and used touchup paint to colour code them.
For the small screw holes, honestly why can't people just use pads
I used some flexiable panel filer to fill the holes then wipe over with a wet sponge, I will use my touchup paint over it tomorrow.
This will do until I can afford my bumpers to be professionally repaired I guess.
