Title: Help Urgent!!!!
Post by: GTI16vGaz on 29 October 2003, 08:41

Last Friday i was drving through sheffield and i come to some lights and Jag xj8 pulled up next to me, so as you would i thought i would race it from the lights, my car did pull away frist  ;D but then my oil light started to flash and my engine was tapping really loud, louder than usual. (then the Jag went flying past)

So i stopped on the parkway with my hazards on checking to see if any oil was leaking and it wasn't. I then phoned a mate who nows a lot more than me n he said my engine was ready for blowing up.... >:( so i was well pissed off at this stage.

I had a 50mile trip so i thought F?$& it so i did the trip and the oil light stopped and the ticking stopped.

Could this be the oil pump failing to pump oil into my engine, this may have casued the ticking (tappping) due to no oil getting pumped through.

As today the car is fine but its on my mind all the time that somets going to go wrong.

Any advice would be great.

Thanksl Lads,  ;)

This sounds strange - but do you have enough oil in the engine?!

If you are low for instance, I know that going round a right hand bend will set it off.

If the dipstick doesn't give you a definitive answer, do an oil change at the weekend and measure how much oil comes out.

Cheers Tinman.. i think the oil level is fine but i'll check it when i get home.

I've already experienced the buzzing on the oil light when turning hard right.

thanks again

You need to take out one of the oil pressure switches and put a gauge in. Try any motor spares shop, they might do one.

I want an oil pressure gauge. I was told to get the reading you link it up to the bit stuck out the side of the block with a johnny on it. haven't done it yet due to lack of funds...  :'(

Certainly sounds like oil starvation exactly as Tin suggests. Also the first thing thats going to suffer is the hydraulic tappets........hence your loud tapping. I assume you've checked the oil level by now, how was it?

Gaz,
I have experienced something like it in the past,  when a cheap and nasty oil gets hot, like after a fifty mile journey and then you demand the engine to do some serious work like racing a jag!  What can happen is your oil is now too thin and will not feed all the way to the Hydraulic tappets.  I was a bit short of money a few years ago and put in some cheap and nasty oil from a German Supermarket.  I then couldn't understand why the buzzer under the dash and the pressure light was comming on.  I changed loads, oil pressure switches etc.  At the end of the day I simply changed the oil for a good quality mineral oil (GTX) and the problem ceased immediately.  The engine is going very strong to this day.  Try a simple oil change first. ;)
