Title: Dinosaur needs advice !!
Post by: Tornado on 21 October 2005, 22:45
Hello
I am an old git with a 1990 8v Golf.
I am not dead yet so i want to enjoy some sounds but I don't want to cut or change anything.
Can anyone advise what are best speakers for replacing the standard items.
Kind regards
Alan

for the price... get some jbl's. they do 6x4 ones for the rear speakers and if you can get a set of speaker grills for your front door pockets, then you can fit some in there. upgrading the dash ones will also do but won't be a vast improvement over the originals. this can all be done with out cutting/changing anything and shouldn't take too long at all.

yeah, any 13cm jobs will fit in the door pocket / grille ones. I had some Alpine coaxials in there (cost me about £50 but god knows what the numbers were). They sounded ok, but if I were to do it again, I'd get some with a bit more treble response, as the location meants they're firing into you calf muscles!!

Some nice 3-way components up front would be good, mounted in the spealer holes in door cards, with the tweeters mounted in the dash. Then replace your rears and the sounds in your car will be a hell of a lot better!!

Oz, if he uses 3 way comps, where is the midbass going to sit?
Tornado you would need to mount the tweeters in your dash locations, the midrange in the doors and the midbass (most likely a 6.5" speaker) somewhere else in the door, or fabricatr the door pockets to put 6.5" in the doors, the 5.25" midrange in a fibre glass kickbuild.

Personally, I would go for the JBL suggestion that Joe says, no messing about apart from sourcing the speaker grills for the doorpockets

Running speaker cable to the back (if there isn't any) is easy and putting standard sized speakers in the rear locations takes 5 minutes or so.
