Title: Shiny steering wheel
Post by: CarbonGTD on 08 December 2023, 13:29
The cabin of my 20 plate Mk 7.5 GTI PP DSG still looks fantastic and unmarked (hardly worn, 37k miles in).  The only tell-tale is the steering wheel which has now turned mostly shiny of rim - does anyone know of any magic treatment etc which can (at least partly) restore the leather wheel to its (former than shiny) state?

I hate shiny steering wheels.
What I’ve used for the past few years is Gliptone Leather cleaner and Gliptone Leather conditioner.
You might need to clean it a few times if really bad but it’s really easy to use.
Use to use it on my 9 year old Discovery with 95K on the clock and with regular use kept the wheel nice and matt.
Whenever possible, I also wash my hands before driving to cut down on grease getting on the wheel (really sad)

As above, that method works over time....

Alternativelly, I have used a "magic sponge" before to remove the grease and shine on a leather steering wheel, before the leather cleaner / conditioner route.

"magic sponge" is a thing, available at amazon, ebay etc....

For simplicities sake Gyeon Strong leather cleaner and leather brush, then drop it down to mild leather cleaner for regular maintenance. Modern leather doesn't require conditioners as it's painted and lacquered. As a result conditioners leave a layer for dirt to attract to which results in making the surface dirtier over time.

Alternatively a reupholster is a great option and gives you the opportunity to make the steering wheel thicker, as the mk7 does have a pretty puny wheel.
