Hi guys, I’ve been contemplating trading my 7.5 golf gti manual in for one with a dsg. Done a WBAC valuation and it’s coming back at £12710 which seems rather low. Any ideas on a rough value please.
Spec of car
2019 GTI performance, pure white 3Door, genuine TCR Sideskirts, rear diffuser and lip spoiler. Almost new Michelins PS4 all round, 3 owners, 43500 miles, full service history, always kept in great condition

WBAC pretty much always give lowball valuations. You could try the likes of Wizzle and Motorway. I see that Carwow and Autotrader websites also have a valuation tool; it’d be worth trying those too so you get a range of valuations rather than just be guided by the WBAC valuation.
Have you owned or driven a DSG before? If not, I’d recommend trying one first as some people don’t seem to get on with DSG. In your position, if DSG is the only thing prompting you to consider changing and it’d be another mk7.5 GTI you’d replace your existing car with, I’d be inclined to keep your current car. That’s just my opinion though.

Because I'm nice I'll offer £13k flat for it
Definitely a very low valuation, around £19-20k is about right. The market is starting to fall hard at the minute, so I'd make a decision soon. Even if it's to move into a £1k scrapper for 6 months until you find what you want.
I agree with SRGTD I personally don't see the point in moving from and to the same car for the sake of dsg, especially if you have to add money to it.

Never go near WBAC!
Some of my best valuations have been with Arnold Clark VW dealers.
In fact I sold my last car to them for cash, no trade in or new order.
Instant settlement, no sh!t.

Thanks for the input guys, yes I was thinking of changing to a 7.5 gti with dsg but not sure the extra cash will make it worthwhile really especially as looking at prices they’re going for 20-25K. I may think of doing a few bits to mine and keeping it as it’s a great car

The difference in price of the region of £7+k for dsg and unknown previous ownership of the dsg needs some serious thought.

There's only three reasons to change car, you're getting an upgrade, you're getting a great deal or you're forced to. Changing for the sake of changing isn't kind to the wallet. Give it a month to think it over, then if you still fancy it look into it more.
But also you are driving one of the last 3 door golfs with the last manual gearbox although still an ordinary gti, it's special in its own right.
-
I get why you fancy the change JB73, I’ve done things like that myself in the past.
I’d strongly advise you drive a few DSG cars if you haven’t already. As Will says, yours is pretty special in its own right and you may live to regret it down the line.
There must be dealers with 7.5 and mk8 GTI’s around you that you could test drive? Ok, the mk8 might make you want to vomit until you actually try one, I’m only suggesting it as it drives similarly to a 7.5 and the driving position and everything else will be familiar enough for test drive purposes, it’s on my list because it might be easier to find a dealer with a mk8 to drive than a 7.5 GTI at any given time (plus it’ll keep your hands warm  ).
See what you think of the ‘box over a few drives. It takes a bit of getting used to.
Four years into DSG boxes for me and I’m still not in love with the things. They de-skill you.
Great for trickling along behind dawdlers at almost tickover, great for traffic light Grand Prix, flaccid for the other 90% of the time unless you leave it in Sport mode (in which case it gets a bit frenetic).
It depends on the type of driver you are I guess, you might love it.

Thanks for the responses guys, it’s much appreciated and given me food for thought. I’m now considering instead of putting quite a chunk of money into another GTI I could get an updated clutch fitted, reinstall my Mountune stage 1 remap, new intake system and possibly a mountune exhaust too.

Just had a play on WBAC. Mines on 23k and apparently worth £14.9k.
That’s a £7k drop in about 6 months.
Autotrader prices are about £24 - £25k (though thats mostly dealer prices)
Looks like previous comments on WBAC are on the money.
-
If you assume a typical dealer markup of between 2k and 3k, that tells its own story.
WBAC absolute bandits.

A couple off months ago I got valuations from Cazoo and Cinch. On the same day with identical inputs I got a £2k difference between them. Unfortunately I can’t remember which was which but unless there are some crazy algorithms at work it suggests someone is relying on the power of advertising.

Doesn’t get enough praise the manual gearshift on these cars, imo.
A big part of the enjoyment of driving, even on a boring commute to work.
It’s an absolute beauty.

That's a good way to measure the true worth of a car, find similar spec, mileage etc at a dealer and take £3000 off and that's likely your trade in price.
Have sold and bought two cars in last 18 months and personally have a fixed amount of money that prepared to pay to change, and look at cars that are maybe stretching beyond what think mines worth + my change money and maybe a squidge more, and in this levelling down market was able to squeeze deals on both that met my change figure.
In the end how much get for yours on paperwork and how much a dealer was asking is irrevelant, its how much paid to change that counts. The trick is to go in close to what's reasonable but on your side of winning and not try luck with ridiculous offers as dealer will just switch off and not be willing to work with you. Finally be prepared to walk away if your change figure increases by more than £250, that was my flex anyway, but got both my cars by sticking to my change money to the penny despite being pushed for more at start of of discussion.

Dealers are expecting to sit with cars longer now, given the rise in interest rates and don't want to overpay for them or they'll make a loss, hence the low offers on these websites. Additionally to this you have customers cancelling orders and dealerships being on the hook for these cars as well (look how many mk8 R's are for sale!)
As Hertsman has said, cost of change is what you're looking at. I've been tempted by a local TCR, but the cost to change in beyond my budget, even including the beyond budget max.
At the end of the day manual or automatic it's the same car, what you like about the car you'll still like and what you hate you'll hate.

As a guide I use whatcar or autotrader valuations.

Selling privately, £21K - big difference compared to WBAC.

I sold a grey 5 door manual to a non Vw dealership in May with 38k on it
Car was immaculate and needed nothing
He gave me £21k for it . 2k more than the VW dealer was offering on a trade in
Forget about WBAC - you’ll get plenty more than they are offering

I guess with WBAC, someone has had to pay for the incredibly tedious adverts over the years.

Dealers will be trying to hang onto their higher prices for as long as can, but definitely a sign they are preparing to drop these higher prices by the beginning of lower offers on trade ins.
Had a conversation with a colleague the other day, whose mortgage has increased by near £700 and he stated in general conversation that getting a newer car was on hold, the cost of living squeeze in combination with a lot more cars in used market will brings prices down, but in reality you get less for yours, you pay less for the car buying, the cost for change, remains unchanged.

Did you know Autotrader buy cars? this is who I use when looking for a value...

I just done a quick valuation on auto trader and valuation was £15710 so a few thousand better than wbac
