Title: GTD Tyres
Post by: Samford on 21 September 2023, 19:00
Just in the process of buying a 2019 GTD with mismatched tyres which we will be replacing.  Can anyone recommend the current tyre of choice?  Having previously owned GTD's and R's, I've always liked the Bridgestone Potenza.  Would really appreciate opinions on what's currently available and any other experiences.  Certainly not looking for cheap.  From memory the previous Bridgestones were REO51.....it's been a while so not sure???

Cheers
Mark

I'm currently running my GTD on Goodyear Eagle Asymmetric 5, but I also hear good things about the newer Asymmetric 6's.

Far more grippy than the Bridgestones they replaced, albeit not as durable.

Michelin / Goodyear / Continental, close your eyes and pick one or pick the best price and forget about it. 99% of the time you'll be driving normally.

Agreed. See which of the above has the best promotion right now and pick that.

Not too many fans of the Bridgestone here. Noisy and rock hard, needs a lot of heat in them to be at their best.

Thanks guys, your comments on the Bridgestone would makes sense, we had these cars in Brisbane.

This is my wife's first car since returning to the UK so comfort, safety and reliability are important.  There seems to be a good deal on the Continental SportContact 7.

Failing that, the Michelin Pilot Sport 5 is also available.

Could someone just confirm these are the correct size please, 225/40 ZR18 92Y?  It says its a summer tyre but I assume it's suitable for UK winters?

Cheers

That is the correct size.

UK winters have been fairly mild in recent years, although that may depend on exactly where in the UK you are.

I've run my Goodyears (which are also a summer tyre) over the past two winters without issue. Drive to the conditions and you'll be fine.

Depending on the mileage your wife does and where you live for the severity of the winters, Michelin Cross Climate 2's may be your best option for all year round, more comfortable versus the summer tyres previously listed, more mileage out of them and better suited for all year round.

Summer tyre performance drops when it's below 7 degrees, something to bare in mind when considering safety.

Thank you,
Only very limited mileage...... we hadn't realised there was such a limited amount of year round tyre options..
we had just about decided on the continental Sport or premium contact are these not suitable for year round use ?

Cheers

Don't worry about it too much - this is the UK not Germany.

You will survive on summer tyres no problem but if the very occasional snow comes, stay at home.
