Title: Lift pump and sender unit!

I am getting a new lift pump for the valver (GSF - £23), but i never taken one out before, i know how to do it, not a problem, but does it attach to the sender unit? and is all the sender unit does is the fuel gauge? - btw - VW told me that the sendre unit was not available anymore?
